Dazed-
I have a room at Hotel Aalborg for the weekend after the cup (Quentin during, expecting there'd be events at the Melkweg). I really like staying in the de Pijp... less touristy n' pricy, and just as close to the museumplein. There's some real cool early 20th century architecture around and south of de pijp...

Here's a little more info regarding the style, Amsterdam School...

I've walked down to this museum a couple of times...

...with a walk back along the Amstel. The walk down on Amstelweensweg takes you past this interesting building...

(compare it to some of the design elements of the new life sciences going up on the waterfront...

It's a big urban hike, makes for quite a chunk of time, but provides an interesting contrast to the downtown. Maybe a bike destination.
Here's a pub guide for the area, as well as others...

It just opened in July I think - for about 50 euros a night I get a private room with my own bath and there's also an elevator. It's kind of a unique concept in that they charge for pretty much everything extra - 5 euros for 24 hours of TV, 7.50 euros for 24 hours of WiFi, 15 euros if you want your room cleaned during your stay, etc. Most of those things I can live without - Club Media coffeeshop is only a few blocks away and I think they have free internet there plus Bagels & Beans is also a few blocks away and I know they have internet there. This will give me a chance to check out de Pijp more this time around.samuraiwriter wrote:In depijp, right on the Albert cuyp market, basically next door to Katsu.DazedandConfusedinOR wrote:@ samuraiwriter - where abouts are you stayin'?

Thansk for the links Suede. That hotel you're staying at looks pretty nice. I usually stay at Hotel Abba on Overtoom, but I wanted to try something different this time so I'm going to give the new easyHotel a try. Location seems pretty decent and the hotel is only a few months old.
Not much into the bar/pub scene, but I do want to check out Cafe Gollem - they have 3 locations and one of them is in De Pijp. They supposedly have a lot of Belgian beers which I'm a big fan of. I especially like Delirium Tremens and Duvel and they say they have 150 bottled beers so hopefully they'll have both of those.
Can't wait for December 14th - driving me crazy. I'm not good at waiting!

You betcha. Just trying to give back to the community.
I didn't know about easyHotel until you mentioned it, and thought, dang, could've stayed here for less. I'll definitely use it in the future- great price in a nice neighborhood. BTW, this will be my first trip over there with iDevices, and I'm curious to see how rampant and easy (connectivity, gps) wifi will be. No sense paying for it your room if it's free everywhere else.
Ron, the bar-keeper of the website, is a big fan of Belgian beers, and usually judges pubs by the number/quality of those beers being poured...

The Belgian style's certainly made its mark on the pdx beer scene.
cheers

Re: December 15-24
Pretty much have everything I need now. Bag is already packed except for a few last minute things I'll need. Can't check in to easyHotel until 12 noon so will probably leave my bag at Centraal Station for a couple of hours while I hit up some of the shops on Warmoesstraat. I should be plenty baked by the time I check in. Hopefully I can catch some Zs on the plane, otherwise I'll be wiped out after a 10.5 hour nonstop flight. Luckily I don't have to worry about weather delays - PDX is the second most on-time airport in the US!

Starting the serious planning now. Hoping we get out unscathed on the 15th, departing from ATL. Hopefully we are far enough south to avoid most of the shitty weather.
We arrive at Schipol on the 16th at 1ish, plan to drop the bags at the apartment and hit Katsu immediately. (I bet around 4:20)

Not sure, but I think people were talking about meeting up at Basjoe at 4:20 on the 16th so hopefully you won't be too wiped out from your flight to meet there.samuraiwriter wrote:Starting the serious planning now. I have a total of 12 coffeeshops in de Pijp that I want to hit up so I'm gonna take a whole day to do a de Pijp crawl with Albert Cuyp market thrown in.
I think there are 5 or 6 places within 4 blocks or so of where I'm staying - Today, Ocean, Space Mountain, Kabouter, Papillon, and Katsu! My hotel is non-smoking unfortunately so I'll be spending a lot of time in those close-by coffeeshops late at night.
My flight gets in early on the 15th so I'm going to put my bag in a locker at Centraal station and then visit a few places on Warmoesstraat until noon. Can't wait.

Right on, if Basjoe is on, count us in. Thanks for the heads up.

Awesome. Can't wait! Let me know if you wanna meet up somewhere on the evening of the 15th. I'm thinking of heading to Barney's Lounge around 8pm on Thursday the 15th. Other than that I plan on being at Bluebird at 9:30am on Friday the 16th. Have a safe trip!samuraiwriter wrote:One week to go...

Re: December 15-24
Lucky you - I have to go through a bit of hell before I get to leave! I have a major pain in the ass linguistics final on Tuesday and then I have to work 3rd shift Tuesday night into Wednesday morning! Well, suits me fine really as I wanted to sleep as much as possible on the flight. It's 10.5 hours non-stop from Portland so if I can sleep I won't have to suffer too much jet lag.bokbokgun wrote:4 more sleeps for me hahaha will probably pm u my mobile num when i get 1 in ams for meetup?
Yeah, go ahead and PM me mobile # if you get one there. I'm bringing my phone and plan on getting a prepaid SIM for while I'm there if it's not too much of a pain in the ass.
If you want to wander by Paradox I'll be there around 5pm on the 15th and then at Barney's Lounge at Reguliersgracht 27 around 8pm. I'll have my laptop as well so as long as I have internet access I should be able to check PMs on here too. Have a good trip!
