What coffeeshop experience can you not miss?

Post by boywonder »

Going to Amsterdam for the first time in years, next year. Only have a weekend. we have always made it up as we've gone along which is fine but I wondered what I shouldn't be missing. When I first started going nearly 20 years ago we were always told to go to Barneys for breakfast and a smoke for example. I know that has changed a bit, there seem to be more of them.

So what is a must?

Hi there Boywonder,

Well I cant yet profess to being an expert in the Amsterdam ways, although I hope to be before my time is over :)

A few things that I personally wouldnt miss going to each visit....

Dampkring 1 (Amazing menu, good prices)
Excalibur (Bar but they have pool tables upstairs as well as allow you to smoke Weed and Tobacco)
Barneys (Open early, now have volcano vapourizers on every table)
Grey Area (Write on the wall, great weed selection, decent prices)
Dolphins (I like this place, go downstairs, although very hot if busy... cool atmosphere)
Popeye (They give you a hit on the peace pipe with every weed purchase, very nice)

And of course you must do lap after lap of the prostitutes, if nothing more than to make tiger faces at the fit ones!.

Also these (but not from personal experience but next on my target list):

Voyagers (Open 6am apparently)
Tweede Kamer (Couldnt find it but rocks apparently!)
Greenplace
Hill Street Blues

If i was you I would put serious consideration into avoiding the following:

Grasshopper (Commercialised rubbish imho)
Bulldog (All except their hostel which is good prices, unlike their weed and drinks)
Kadinsky (I have had rudeness, high prices, bad weed, just too bigger risk to spend any time)
Rasta Baby (Apparently their advetised weights INCLUDE the bag!!, what a con)

I hope this helps, Im sure I have many other great places in mind but cannot recall them sitting at my desk at work.

Enjoy your stay, PM me with anything good you find.

Thanks

Loki

Very subjective as to what is a "must," but I would recommend renting a bike and visiting some of the coffeeshops farther out like the Loft (part of Siberie, de Republiek, etc).

hi thanks for the suggestions Loki, Excalibur sounds a good shout and I did enjoy Damkring last time till I lost it. I have always wanted to try Grey Area but it wad always packed though we've been in larger groups before.
yes the grasshopper is not my bag, tried it once, find't like it, not the vibe I was after. I think I may have had breakfast at the Bulldog but not too sure. certainly not had a session there.
I'm pretty sure we'll go to Barneys, bit of a tradition for us so that sounds a good addition.

D&C I've always fancied getting a bike but a bit concerned about how that mixes with smoking. could be funny though. but I did want to try places off the beaten track i.e. centrum

Boner, I 've seen this thread thanks and I've made a list. so many to choose from, bit of research on each I think.

I do find that atmosphere and experience as important as the weed. if I'm not comfortable then the weed is not going to help.

Smoked my last joint of SSH @ Resin about 10:20am right before my insane train ride to Paris. Bud tender must have just crawled out of bed, he was the quietist bud tender of the whole trip. Got a juice, smoked my joint. Had to have been the most chill I felt at a coffeeshop. That breakfast shop with all the pastries (omelets too) is just down that way..... Hmmm planning out my return trip already!

Seems to me that getting ripped off at the Greenhouse is a "must experience" these days ?

But seriously a wee boat trip is essential , a different perspective on the city , even better if a smoking trip  enjoy

do De Pijp, Vistit Nes, i wouldnt rent a bike (but it would be nice for visiting coffeeshops further afield), smoke more than you can handle miles from the center and make your way back, rent an apartment, vondelpark on a nice day,pop into Haarlem, buy a bong, prossy (if your into that).

OG Boat tours from Voyagers run 4 times a day, E10 for 1hr30 minutes, I done it and cant recommend it enough, so much better than one of those commercial tourist barges, plus you can smoke, drink and play music on the boat. Great times :D

a boat trip is a possible. done a couple, the first was a night time tourist one aided by some special chocolates, the second was a smoking one but 10 of us were on a tiny boat that had to turn back after 10 mins cos of the waves, can't remember who that was with but they were very nice about it and gave us our money back.

looking at Amsterdam escape apartmentd rather than a hotel, sounds a lot more chilled than a hotel

I really miss being able to drink a beer in a coffeeshop. Not a bar or pub or whatever that tolerates drinking, but an actual coffeeshop.

When I was single going down to Greenhouse Centrum or deDampkring, bucking up to the bar and chilling out with a few beers and a spliff was awesome! Remember those hottie waitresses and free candy at deDampkring 8) .
