My suggestions in the Netherlands would be for Haarlem, Alkmaar, or The Hague. In Belgium my favorite cities are Brugge or Ghent. And Germany is also an option with a visit to Cologne, Dusseldorf, or Bonn. All within 15 mins to 3 hours train ride from Amsterdam. For national train schedule info visit http://www.ns.nl/en/ For international trains look to Belgium http://www.b-europe.com/Travel/Booking/Tickets And for tickets to Germany http://www.bahn.com/i/view/USA/en/index.shtml Tickets for any of the Dutch cities I posted can be purchased on the day of departure from the machine or service desk for an extra charge.

Peace

So many possibilities. Haarlem is really close and has some great museums such as the Teylers Museum (oldest museum in The Netherlands) and the Frans Hals Museum, not to mention some nice coffeeshops.

Last year I visited Utrecht (about 30 minutes by train) and Zandvoort on the North Sea coast - can easily be combined with a visit to Haarlem (Zandvoort that is - Utrecht is the other direction).

If you're feeling adventurous you can fly easyJet from Amsterdam to quite a few European destinations for pretty cheap, such as Basel in Switzerland for less than $100 RT.

I'm sure people on here could give you other good ideas!

Depending on the weather and the time of year you are going to be in Amsterdam, it's always fun to visit the beach. A trip to Zandvoort is easily tied to a trip to Haarlem and a visit to Scheveningen can be tied to a trip to The Hague. The Haarlem/Zandvoort combination is much the easier of the two.

It is not a lot days.

If you are traveling from the US, do not count the first and last day. The first day for me was recovery from the flight. Although you land in the morning and there is quite a bit one can do, once the sleep depravation catches up to you, especially if you are smoking, it's time to give in and sleep.

The last day should not count either.

My trip was for 8 days, felt more like 4 days. I'm aiming for at least 10 days + 2 travel days next time.

Enjoy yourselves!
There must have been a door there in the wall when I came in.
