Re: Birthday Adventures 4: Romancing the Stoner
Day 16 / December 1, 2011 Departure Day…aka…D-Day
…NO!!…it’s really Go Home Day.
I am more aware than ever of Bong’s arm pressed against mine. We seem to awaken at the same time. I’m betting he’s thinking about Go Home Day too. Our palpable sadness is temporarily swept away as our bare bodies merge in the throes of melancholic passion. I don’t want to leave. Alas, we must.
Good morning…sort of…
Breakfast is usual…bananas and milk with our “instant” breakfast powder mixed in. Lattes are had downstairs along with bong hits and joints. Sadness is obvious when I look at THE NOTEBOOK and see no notes for today. Well, except for the address and hours of the post office. I am sure we are smoking with the Slo’s and Marriageuana. I think that Mr. and Mrs. Highly Blessed are here this morning. The skies seem sad as well. Today it looks like rain…
The conversations happen, even though they are not noted, and soon I am, once again, saying, “MMMM!!! Tasty!” To which SloWife replies, “You say that EVERY time we roll one of these!” “These” being that wonderful mix of Blue Cheese and Grey Crystals… What can I say? It’s GREAT! (thanks, guys!)
Knowing the clock is our enemy today, we head back upstairs to finish our packing and to grab the last box for the post office. Back down the stairs to the scooter…we have to return this too…and soon we are off to Singel 250. Quickly and painlessly, the box is sent off on its journey across the Atlantic. Our journey for this moment is to return our orange friend. Walking through the door of the scooter place, I take one last big whiff of the smell of tires and settle our bill. In no time we are on a tram and headed back to Voyagers. Bong takes this shot on the way:
Bong’s shot…

The room is given a last “once-over” to make sure we have everything. Satisfied that we haven’t left anything behind, we lug the filled cases down the steep stairs. There is still time for a last smoke before we have to get over to Centraal. We smoke and say our farewells to everyone. I do my best to “stay brave” and not get too emotional… Our enemy soon tells us it’s time to leave. Damn clock.
The walk over to Centraal is way too fast for my liking…ironically, when we arrive, the walk here seems SO LONG!! Without any problems, we are on the train. Again, way too fast for my liking… To keep my mind off of the impending departure, I distract myself with photography…
Outside the train window…on the way to Schiphol

What the…?

Schiphol appears outside the open train doors and we reluctantly de-train. Since my camera is still out, I still take photos:
Eerste hulp? Think we can get a gram for the flight?!?

I’ve never seen one of those in a U.S. airport!

THIS one is Holiday Card worthy…imho…

Though we are early, our enemy, the clock, tells us it’s time to get on our flight. This sad fact is confirmed by the big voice over the crackly intercom. Seats are found and more photos are taken. Amsterdam is crying too…
Schiphol Amsterdam Control Tower

The hour, minute and second of departure have no choice but to arrive. We have no choice but to depart. Smoke a joint and read it again…it makes sense…lol…
Bye! …and thanks for everything!!!

Ok…it IS pretty…even tho it sucks now…

Without incident and without a very good meal, we land in Detroit. Bong’s plane to Baltimore departs before mine to San Francisco. I wait with him at his gate, until that freakin’ clock does its thing again. We kiss. We hold each other. The line diminishes. He HAS to leave. I can’t stop the tears, but I rip myself away, since I must. He turns and walks down the ramp. One last kiss as the switchback ramp brings him back to me for a second. Too soon, however, he is through the jet way door and disappears from my sight.

Bong’s flight to BWI…

My flight home begins with sheer sadness…mixed with great, fresh, new memories. Realizing it is now December, I grab the new issue of the in-flight magazine. To my surprise, our friend is on the front cover:
That Frog…he’s EVERYWHERE…

Arriving at SFO, I feel excited to see my daughter and my dogs and my kitties once again. The memories, stories and photographs are still fresh and just waiting to be rediscovered. About a week after I get home, the postman delivers the box we mailed out on my birthday… Early Christmas for me!!
A bit of Amsterdam on my walkway

IT WAS SOOOOOOO FUN! AGAIN!!!
The countdown to next year begins…
Until then...stay tuned...and stay stoned!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
