Advice for judging marijuana quality

So I'm off to the Dam in 2 weeks.
I've been smoking on and off for years but, coming from Ireland, I've mainly been exposed to low quality hash / weed, so don't have much experience in judging how good weed is. I'm interested in what criteria people use to judge how good weed is before they buy it.
I get the things to look out for:
1) lots of crystals
2) strong smell
3) Absence of seeds
Anything else I should be looking out for?
It would be useful to know what qualities BAD weed has, so as to know what to avoid also...
Anyone any tips?

I also look for taste, spacey high or couchloch, edgy or relaxing, whether it's a giggler or not and length of effect.
I hope that helps
and taste, did I mention taste?

Cheers, Scandalous Monk, if that is your real name ...
I'm talking about judging weed BEFORE I buy it, just to be clear - no problem judging it when I'm smoking it

Generally if I'm suddenly surrounded by gangs of pixies dancing in the moonlight I know that its at least OK...

D'oh, I thought you meant things to consider when judging weed for the cup.
I have a bit of a one track mind at the moment lol

No worries! Its my fault - wasn't clear enough in my first post. Would love to be a judge but on a budget and it seems expensive. Are you judging this year?

haha well price is always a good factor to consider - how much it costs.
then how nice are the nugs - is the weed stemmy / leafy // nice nug / small buds etc?
then i like to focus on the taste of course -- taste is a huge faactor with me.. love good tasting stuff
i dont like harsh stuff either -- i look for bud that has little to no harshness of course as i wanna smoke a canon
last but not least of course is the high that the herb brings this could be the most important obviously.
overall appeal of how manicured and nice it looks could be considered as well -
however if you consider all these you should be on a good path to picking a great strain
if you are able to look at trichomes under a microscope thats always a plus to see how mature they are as well

popeyes has one normally - everytime i go they have their pink kush on display

No mate, unfortunately I couldn't justify the cost of a judges pass but I will be there during the cup, 13 days to go

Cheers Mate. So what am I looking for here? I read that Voyagers has a microscope aswell, but what am I actually looking for when I look through it?

Does the size of the buds have anything to do with the quality?

I would take a look at the buds first and if theres not a not of weed left in the tub, and only small buds left and more than usual '' shake '' in the bottom of the tub maybe p-ass and ask about another strain. Rookies is one of my favourite coffeeshops because I feel i get treated nice therebudtender opens tubs, gives you a smell of it if you like, gives advice, lots of coffeeshops do this also and its a plus point for me. also the coffeeshops rated by the folk on this site are not praised up for nothing, Ive been 3 trips now and fact is if you go to the favourite coffeeshops of the regulars in here you will generally get good weed right across the menu, some shops just are better than other due to better quality control and better management.
