Normally I don't even bother carrying around my passport just in case gets lost, got ID'd by HB @ Voyagers when I was there last month (only place to do so btw, not a problem though, and understandable, didn't introduce myself, but even if did so, best for them to cover themselves). Luckily had my driving licence.
So, think I'll have to start carrying it around when out there next - or the photocopy if that seems acceptable by the sounds of it - has everyone been okay with accepting copies?
Well I've never been asked for id from memory, but seeing as the coffeeshops sound to be checking more these days (Voyagers for example) to rightfully protect there licence I have no problem with that in the slightest.

But seeing as UK citizens cant get issued with European i.d. cards (idiotic UK government) then the only legal form of id for UK citizens under Dutch law it seems is passports. But in saying that it would also be reasonable for safety and travel reasons (cant get home without the original) to accept that the original should be kept safe and possably not have to have the original kept on a person as there is the risk of it getting stolen or lost. So surely a photocopy of a passport should be acceptable to carry and therefor acceptable for inspection is such places like a coffeeshop?.

Photo Driving License can be used as well as your passport, btw only Voyagers asked me for id on my trip.

As far as i'm aware, a photocopy of your passport is not acceptable.

My neighbour was knocked down by a cyclist and he was arrested when the polite came because he had no i.d. on him... they're pretty strict on it and it could cause hassle for the coffee shop if you don't carry

The coffeeshops being the only reason i'd want to carry acceptable id for. On the other hand why do or would hotels want to keep a persons passport for in the first place?, more so if they are making a booking on a verified credit card?. Not all us British people are trouble makers assuming it is only the British who have issues with being asked to leave there passport with the hotels seeing as it's clearly not the case with most on here?.

Cheers for that, some people don't realise that not carrying around an ID card/passport is illegal and can get you arrested in some countries as we don't have that (yet, they've tried!) in the UK.

So, looks like European identity card or a passport to be on the safe side and make sure, and I suppose a photocopy isn't actually the real thing and could be easily faked, so I doubt a copy would be acceptable myself now thinking about it...

Since 1 January 2005 identification is compulsory at 14. Legal proof of identity are a Dutch or other European identity card or a passport. A Dutch driving license is valid while other driving licenses are not valid for identification. It is not compulsory to carry a proof of identity, but it is compulsory to show it to the authorities when they ask such under certain circumstances. Such circumstances include suspicious behaviour, committing any offense, or if a person is interviewed as a witness of a crime. Identity checks at events where the public order may be in danger are also allowed. Otherwise random identity checks by the police are not allowed in principle but can happen in certain areas such as a train station or doubtful areas i.e. redlight district, and a fine for not showing proof of identity may be successfully challenged in such cases. The fine for not being able to show proof of identity when legally required is € 50

I've never been asked to leave my passport in Holland (although been deposit/cash on arrival most of the time), so maybe it's just the hotels you went to.

Yes, but us UK citizens are possably unique in Europe as being one of the few European Union countries that dont issue European I.D. cards, as said the government stopped issueing them a few years ago now.

A shame really as I grew fond of going to the Bulldog hotel where they have always wanted to keep the passports. Guess to protect myself it's better to go elsewere in future seeing as they seem not want to budge on the issue and they should know there laws to know we have to keep the passports on us at all times.
