Banged Up Abroad

Post by Doog »

Saw this programme on UK Channel 5 on Monday night. Was all about a man and woman who had got to know each other during the summer season in Ibiza, where they were both working.

When the season stopped, so did the work but they still had a fair bit of money and they decided to go to Amsterdam to try and find some work.
The search was in vain until they were approached by a guy who offered them an all expenses paid two week holiday to Costa Rica.

There was a catch, however, as they would have to carry 5 kilos of cannabis resin back to Amsterdam, which they would receive in briefcases on the last night of their stay in Costa Rica.

They received the suitcases as planned but noticed that they were a lot heavier than they had imagined. They proceeded to the airport in Costa Rica and had to catch a plane to Mexico before connecting to Amsterdam.

The customs officials at Costa Rica simply waved both the man and the woman through and they were allowed on to the plane.

When the plane landed in Mexico, their luggage WAS checked and the 5 kilos of cannabis was found (along with an additional 15 kilos of pure cocaine)

Both were sentenced to 10 years in jail in Mexico.

Anyone else see the programme?
Anyone else heard about this kind of thing happening with tourists in Amsterdam?

BAhahahah. Serves them right. First off, you should never smuggle drugs in a briefcase. However, deciding to do so, they should have gone straight to Amsterdam. Why the hell would you attempt to smuggle that much shit over extra international borders? Pure stupidity. And 10 years won't cure them of that kind of stupidity, either.
50 characters? Nothing to say in 50 characters.

The most amazing thing for me was the fact that she had read a book called "Forget You Have a Daughter", which is about being locked up in Thailand in a similar fashion, just months before. If that doesn't put you off smuggling, nothing will.

The Jails in Mexico weren't half as bad as I was expecting...I've stayed in worse hotels. They did let me check out when I wanted though.

I thought the interviews with the man and woman were carried out in such a way that you didn't know if they were caught/actually in jail until the end.

It looked like they were simply sitting in front of a black wall/background and then at the end the camera panned out to show the jail cells.

It was the first in a series of programmes, with each one concerning different groups or individuals.

I prefer those kinds of programmes to the various drama series' you see on the box these days that deal with the same kind of subject matter.
