I agree with Ron Swanson, the rate your shared for JFK is crazy high. I have a
Kayak fare alert for this route setup and I recently got an alert for May 5th via Icelandair for $668. This year, it looks like Icelandair and Aer Linugs are the least cost options from East coast with reasonable flight durations and layovers. TAP is also cheap but their connections look awful.
For any other destination I have found that buying a ticket between 65-60 days prior to departure is ideal. This hasn't held true for Amsterdam. For example, I bought my May trip in early December, 150 days in advance. So far my continuing alerts inform me that the fare is still going up, now in the range of $726. It was the same condition last year, when I bought a ticket about 5 months in advance and never saw the rate fall below what I paid (which was $585 in May 11).
Good luck and enjoy your next visit
PS - on 02/06/12 lowest fare alert was $722 Aer Lingus (88 days to departure target). It does seem Amsterdam remains unique in that the 'sweet spot' for buying low airfare is not 90-60 prior as with other destinations.

ATM: for 4/12 to 4/23
JFK>AMS $1080 Delta/KLM
IAD>AMS $1100 Continental
MCO>PHL>AMS $1239 US Air
PHL>AMS $1175 US Air
Prices have not changed as of this Tuesday, 12/20 - 114 Days out from 4/12/12
USAIR - MCO>PHL>AMS - $1238 - Down $1
USAIR - PHL>AMS - $1175 - No Change
Continental - IAD> AMS - $1080 - No Change
KLM/Delta - IAD>AMS - $1080 - Down $20
I finally found the route we used last year:
Delta - DAB>ATL>AMS - $1508 Yikes!
The least expensive ticket so far:
IcelandAir IAD>KEF>AMS - $835
I noticed a lot of 1 stop routes are flying through DTW. I'm not pricing those as they make for a 15 hour trip for what should be 8 hours or a 10 hour trip.
But what's with flying through Detroit, less expensive landing fees & fuel?
Detroit is second in the most flights to Amsterdam via Delta per day. They have 3 flights per day going out, Minnesota has 4. All the east coast cities have one or two if lucky. Crazy, huh?

That is crazy, airlines operate on such slim margins it must make a difference to route through there.
Current trend of pricing is down in most cases:
Delta
JFK and IAD nonstops = $909 about $200 down.
DAB>ATL>MCO = $1213 down $275.
US Air
MCO>PHL>AMS = $1128, No change.
However, PHL>AMS = $4481 for the same flight leg as above.

Just booked United Airlines CLE>IAD>AMS for $877.10.
Was $1,172 last week.
edit - Checked the same flight the next day (17Jan) and it was up to $968.10. I might have pulled a timely trigger there.
There's a flight out of Chicago for the 877 price, but only 40 minutes to make the AMS flight. That's cutting it too close for me. That flight is already boarding just as I'm landing, IF I'm landing on time.

Just now booked through Delta for $850 with one stop, which I always have anyway. Don't think it will go much lower, all the seats seem to be going quickly.
One flight I was watching that connected in PHL went up almost $400 literally overnight, thought it might be time to book and found a decent deal ~ jumped on it. You did as well, Nimrod ^5 lol
See y'all the 14th-28th!

Yep TC I knew about that and checked Tuesday and Wednesday, that's how I got this fare. Just looked and the same flight I booked last night for $850. is now at $1,085. PR's is now $1,370. We saved about $800. You can still get one for $850 but the only flight to choose from has a 30 minute layover time before the flight to AMS, nowhere near enough for me to feel comfortable.
The prices come down if they have plenty of seats left but it's not looking good and I won't take the chance of not having a ticket or paying a lot more. Good luck to everyone with the fares this year ~ see it at a decent price? Grab it.
