'ang on a minute - i'm sure someone could provide the figures but I think it's true to say that a great many coffeeshops have been closed by the various measures over the years by slow attrition?! I don't know the figures of which you speak but I'm sure they're easy enough to find.
I agree that in all likelihood a vast majority of shops have been closed for reasons other than the owner(s) decided to move on from the C/S business.
Something else for the masses to know/remember is that the government doesn't issue C/S licenses anymore, haven't in quite some time. Once they get their hands on a license, it won't be reissued, it's gone. There are a few establishments that have bought the licenses of other shops. I don't know the background story on why the owners of the former shops wanted out, clearly none of the shops are in any kind of violation or they wouldn't exist. Regardless, if someone doesn't buy the license, it goes bye-bye.
Imagine if there was only one Barney's, one Dampkring, one Rokerij, one Bulldog, etc..., bad experiences not withstanding. Although I don't give a rats ass at the moment about C/S chains like the ones mentioned, there is however some room for future concern if these chains take over (monopolize) the scene. Could be good, could be bad.
Over 21 for weed...
Over 25 for alcohol... wtf?
Happy trails...

+1. I think toking is an adult thing and kids shouldn't be doing it. Just like smoking cigarettes or drinking alcohol. Though here in Canada it's 19+ ...

i dont know. look at booze in europe. in britain we can drink at 18, many european countries have a lower age of consent, and its britain with the bigger binge drinking problem. raising the age has its negatives, it makes the exitment of getting fucked in public something you do as an adult, you dont grow out of getting silly when you become an adult, like you would if you'd been introduced as an older adolescent.... im guessing barneys are having to react to nervous times, but in general its not necessarily a positive.

I think you'll find a lot of countries have problems with binge drinking they just dont make it as public as we do.

I have lived in England, and I suggest you pay a visit to Finland - I suspect you will suddenly change your mind and begin to view your countrymen as civilized people with a healthy, moderate relationship with alcohol.

they should of put it at 25 years old... a lot of 21 years olds still act like idiots children brats ... at 25 you lived life a bit... realizing that young ppl in early 20s are annoying..wondering if you acted like them ... realize its time to grow out of the stage of being stupid ...
