Amsterdam Coffeeshop Directory Forums

Hi there,
I have a bit of a weird question.
I am coming to Amsterdam with a friend who happens to be a budding politician in my home country. I am keen for him to see just how regulated, zero criminality and responsible the coffee shop scene is in Amsterdam. He is very anti weed.
Can anyone recommend a coffee shop/s that I could take him to that represents the best set up he could see? I don’t mean by quality of product, but rather cleanliness of facilities, nice ambiance, no roaring music and finally with a rich Dutch/local culture to it. I was thinking coffeeshops outside of the CBD may be the best, but I just don’t know of any. I’ll try anything.

Dampkring, Greenhouse and Barneys (Haarlemmerstraat), any or even all of them.

Paradox would be my suggestion. While still in the Centrum it has a more relaxed feel.

Yes, Paradox would be a good one.

Also, Hill Street Blues (Nieuwmarkt not Warmoestraat) has a nice relaxed vibe to it, as does Katsu near the Albert Cuypmarkt and La Tertulia on the Prinsengracht.

I'd go with Club Media, not in a touristy area, well laid out, big, airy and comfortable. Probably the opposite of most anti weed folk's expectations.

Take him to Yo-Yo in the Pijp where he can see a very neighborhood oriented shop next to a primary school.

Also, be prepared to really discuss the issues. The cannabis laws here are really a mess.

just choose somewhere thats way out of the obviously touristy areas. that way, there will be no prositiutes, no bong shops, no crack heads or pissed/stoned brits shouting down the street, en route. all those things would create a pre-conception of what the coffeeshops are doing to the area. choose a shop in 'de pijp', 'jordaan' etc. seeing a normal, functional, even pretty street, with a coffeeshop unexpectadly in the middle, causing no harm.

eg: rokerij 4 for example

Just make sure you walk by the line at Grey Area to see how busy it can be.. look at a menu, explain the price, and then let them know how much of that money goes to the Dutch government. . go past wok n' walk to show the thriving restaurants. i wouldnt take him to a smaller shop like Basjoes or Voyagers , go into de pijp for Katsu , Papillon,, thats just my opinion

The more I think about La Tertulia, the more I think it's one of the better options for you.

Very friendly service, never too busy, never a tourist in sight, if it's not too cold/wet you can sit outside on the Prinsengracht and watch the world go by. I especially love it in the mornings when it's really quiet and you can sit outside with a coffee and a hash pipe before taking a stroll through the Jordaan and stopping for breakfast. One of the more civilised ways to spend an Amsterdam morning.
