First trip

Post by I23 »

I'm traveling though Europe at the moment and just taking it all in, I thought I might as well spend some time in amsterdam !!

Quick questions. What are some nice clean coffee shops with helpful staff, I'm traveling on my own and am happy to just chill really for a week or 2.

What are some local foods to look out for. Places for some good walks/photography.

Smoking recommendations ? And the laws re possession and smoking in public.

Thanks

That's a huge amount of ground you're asking us to cover there! Have alook at the I love Amsterdam website.

The easy bit is about the legal aspect. It's techincally illegal to have cannabis but in practice anything under
5 grammes is always ignored and very often much larger amounts are ignored as well. If you have over 5g then it's possible you could get into trouble but you would have to attract the attention of the police which only happens if you behave in a very bad way indeed.

Unlike say the UK, the police in the Netherlands are mostly interested in crimes that cause significant problems and there isn't all that many of them either.

You can smoke in public but it is not always a sensible thing to do. But you won't get picked up by the cops smoking cannabis in the open air in the Dam. The Dutch are allowing smoking of tobacco in some bars and places when elsewhere in europe it's not permitted. But a lot of bars don't want you smoking weed in there so use your head. Just to confuse matters a lot of coffee shops in theory don't allow smoking tobacco on the premises and we're supposed to smoke pure weed in there.

Thanks for all the fast answers, I spent a few hours flicking though the forums. I should be there on the second half of january. I should have been more specific, say lighting up in a scarcely occupied park before lunch, or outside a hostel, rather than anywhere that would get in someone else's way.

Looking forward to it.

My first coffee shop was sheeba and made it my first visit ever since fits your bill and good weed too also katsu

Only ever eaten at mac ds or kfc not really a big eater but theres loads of places to eat

Though you can smoke outdoors in public without any problem doesnt mean you have to Just not cool imo, Ams is a city with resedents and children about everywhere who may not smoke bud so i always smoke in a cs or hotel.

The 5g law is kinda funny you get cought on street prob nothing happen a totaly different thing if you get cought with over that in a cs they can also incur penalties for you having too much on ya.

All in all tho I wouldnt worry too much about things youll find it a beautiful city what you can spend a week walking round just looking at buildings going from cs to cs and meeting loadsa new people.

basjoe, 420, homegrown fantasy, katsu. they are bright and airy cafe feeling places, all with highly rated service and weed.

What are some local foods to look out for. Places for some good walks/photography.

food: holland is famous for its indonesian food. a but like britain for its indian. try it. also try the raw herrings, they're..... delicious :P

walks/photography: everystreet in the centre. the redlight district is something to be seen at night, you can get some good night time shots of the area form canal bridges, just do NOT aim the camera at any of the workers.

Smoking recommendations ? And the laws re possession and smoking in public.

recommendations, ask to see and smell the strains and compare beofre buying, follow your nose, be polite and ask the budtenders opinions and other friendly looking customers, and check the travelougue pages on here, youll see trends appearing in whats good.

Thanks

have a good one, and let us know your experiences and opinions
