it depends... if you're only going to be there a couple of days, or only want to see a couple specific museums, probably Iamsterdam. If you are going to be there a week or more, or make multiple trips in a year and would go to many museums, definitely museumkaart.

My wife and I did the IAMSTERDAM card last summer and it's worth it IF you plan on doing at least the following:

1) Visit both the Van Gogh and the Rijksmuseum
2) take a Canal Boat Tour (one of the big ones)
3) Use the trams or metro a lot
4) Visit at least one other participating museum (my recommendations: Our Lord in the Attic, Willet-Holthuysen, Rembrandthuis)

Note that if you are planning to visit the Anne Frank House that is NOT included in the IAMSTERDAM card.

One advantage the I Amsterdam card has over the Museumkaart is that it will get you entry into the Hortus (one of my favorite Amsterdam sites). Neither the kaart or I Amsterdam card will give you entry to the Anne Frank Huis.

Take a decent pear of footwear and walk everywere!. I did that last year and seen far more interesting things (well seemed interesting at the time when off my fuckin head) and sights than had I got transport round the city.

Was bad on the feet for me but I managed several miles a day walking last year and enjoyed it a lot with a few cold beers to cool myself down afterwards.

Haha im the same - I much prefer walking around, especially if going from Centraal to Leidesplein, such a cool walk.

YES! :!: Not 'Free' but 2 3-4 Euros a pint and 7.5% and up alcohol, a real gem. And, it's in a windmill to top it off!

These are all great suggestions, and I have to be honest, most of what's fun in Amsterdam is walking around, seeing the sights, and people watching, which is all free. I would add that going to Albert Heijn for picnic fixings is a great way to feed a group cheaply, and makes a trip to Vondelpark even more fun. (Get a few dutch cheeses, the AH brand are great, one soft one hard, some sausage, a baguette or two and some apples, add a little bit of chocolate and chips for munchies.) Also, apples and bananas with peanut butter is the breakfast of champions.

I've been meaning to ferry north and get to the library (I LOVE libraries!) that's a great suggestion Winnie!
