Depending on how long you're going to be there, the museumkaart, while not in itself cheap, can be an incredible value! Just going to Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh covers like 2/3 of the price, so if you're going to be there a week or more and like museums it is an incredible deal.

I wished I had gotten the Museumkaart on previous trips, totally seems worth it.
The Schuttersgalerij is free, a ferry across the IJ is free and the sculpture gardens around the Rijksmuseum are free (at least during renovations).

Not only is it a great value just in terms of $, but also skip the line priviliges at some museums (HUUUUGE added value at Van Gogh!!), and it's good for a year! So my museums for the month I am spending there this summer are already paid for! Can't beat that!!

I can't think why I've never bought one of these passes before, just never did the research I guess. I'd still like to see FOAM & Huis Marseille, which get free entry with the kaart.

How about a trip to Haarlem? Like a mini Amsterdam but a bit cheaper and its only E7.60 return, theres a map of the coffeeshops kicking around ACD somewhere.
In Amsterdam i think the Cannabis College
http://www.cannabiscollege.com/ is free and they also let you smoke some of your own in a vapouriser. If you want to rent a bike the cheapest ive found in amsterdam is
http://www.recycledrentals.com although i am yet to use them.
Have a great time

This is where I bought mine, though I also believe you can buy it at any museum that accepts it...

you could walk up to the top of Nemo for free
http://www.e-nemo.nl and while you're in that neighbourhood, pay a visit to the fantastic public library
http://www.oba.nl/ and have a coffee or eat on the top floor... great view from the terrace... and then go to the back of central station and take a free ferry across to the north

Yes, that's true. You can buy them at the museums. I had forgotten that.
