Places to smoke and drink

I'm going to be in A'dam on Tuesday/Wednesday with someone who doesn't smoke and tends to drag me out of coffee shops to go for a drink. I know that Lost in Amsterdam is supposed to be renowned for its cocktails and its cats, and somewhere someone here said Nes-Café was a better bet for a beer, but do people have any other recommendations? I've never been particularly keen on searching them out when I've been on my own, but now I have someone else to keep happy.
