Rokerij shops shut down!?

Got the ominous tweet from Smoker's Guide:
"Thanks 4 all da memories #Coffeeshop Rokerij - great atmospheres & top #marijuana & #hashish in 4 shops in #Amsterdam. We'll miss u all! :("

Terrible news! ANY shop that gets shut down is a loss to us all, but the shops really represented a big part of what I love about the Amsterdam smoking scene. I felt that they were as close to being in an opium den as I'd ever get (apparently, too close, I guess).

So I'm hoping that this is an isolated case--from my admittedly brief skimming of the translated articles it looks like the owners got busted dealing in harder things than the typical coffeeshop offerings--and not representative of the recent "Let's be evil and do everything we can to shut the coffeeshops down" movement.

I'll never forget my first time at the main Rokerij. It was also the first time to Amsterdam, and first time smoking hash. We had the best seat in the house, up against the wall in the main room. The fan spinning too slow to make a breeze, but just right to complete the incredible atmosphere. Sipping a beer (at the time), smoking some NYD and Crystal Clear (from Katsu), I could have sat there for hours. So we did. It's one of those memories that will always spring to mind when I think of Amsterdam.

So bummed...

I had my favourite ever Dam smoke there, Hash Plant in 2005 an amazing smoke. I loved all of them and I'm sad that I will never be able to go again.

I went in the Rockerij ll on my last day there for a final purchase and smoke last month. Bought 1.3g of Top Sahara Maroc, which was quite a nice hash. Spent a couple of hours in there, first in the front tobacco smoking area, and then further inside the shop. I liked the chilled atmosphere in there. I was planning to go back in there next time I go, but obviously won't be able to now this has happened.

I was quite amused by the pretty female bartender there, who put her coat on and went and stood out front to smoke a fag. It just seemed really bizarre that everyone else in the place were smoking mixed spliffs yet she went outside for her ciggie. She was just keeping within in the law I suppose, despite the fact that her boss obviously hadn't.

Very sad to see a whole chain disappear.

From what HBlessed said, there's a few other places that are going to be disappearing soon as well, probably for engaging in other 'criminal' activity. Let's face it, with the ridiculous backdoor rule there, by definition every coffeeshop's involved in 'criminal' activity, so they could close them all if they really wanted to.

As it is it's all quite ominous and doesn't bode well for the future.
