Fainting plants

"A friend of mine" is having problem with his third harvest, seeds germinate as usual, but once plants start to grow (3-5 cm) they fall on their side and die in 3 or 4 days

Tried with those cube (sorry, i'm not native english speaker) and directly in the soil, same result.

They were under a 600 watt hps lamp, about 70 cm far and got watered once or twice a day with very little water.

Where could the problem be?

thats a lot of heat very close to the seedlings.

get straws from mc donalds, cut to length to suit the plant, then slice it open and place around the stem and push it into the soil a bit. oh yeah,,,,ease up on the water

their wooden coffee stirrers are good for plant labels too

Anything else i should try?
They are not falling just cause i'm keeping them up now, still look very fragile...

EDIT

I've read that it may be due to the distance from the bulb, now is about 60 cm.

Hope i don't have to prepare for a funeral, the loss of 5 is something hard to stand

Veg them under propagation lights ? T5 , CFL until they get a decent strength about them ?

thats a problem that can come up if you put rockwool cubes into soil, because the soil seems to suck the moisture out of the cube. I think its much better to use a little soil for the sprouted seed. The straws Are a great idea to keep em up, i would also try to spray the cube a bit with water now and then to keep it moist without overwatering the whole soil. Once you have some roots into the soil the problem is solved
