This was on DutchNews.nl:
Public prosecutor to set aside cannabis complaints

Wednesday 02 May 2012

The public prosecution department said on Wednesday it would not act on complaints by foreign tourists that they had been refused admission to cannabis cafes in the south of the country, website nu.nl reported.

From May 1, all 80 so-called coffee shops in the south of the country should have been turned into private members’ clubs and customers must prove they live in the locality to be able to buy soft drugs. The measure will go nationwide on January 1, 2013.

The government hopes the new rules will reduce drugs tourism and criminality but opponents fear there will be an increase in street dealing.

Legal action

On Monday Maastricht café Easy Going refused entrance to a handful of foreigners in an effort to encourage legal action.

A spokesman for the local prosecution department said the complaints had been recorded and it is up to the tourists themselves to take the matter to court.

The European Court of Justice ruled last year restricting sales to Netherlands' residents only is 'justified by the objective of combating drug tourism' and reducing public nuisance. The aim of the restriction is to maintain public order and protect public health, the court said.

At the moment, the Dutch authorities turn a blind eye to the sale of small quantities of hashish and marijuana in licenced cafes.

Coffee shops have become a popular tourist attraction, particularly in Amsterdam and border towns such as Maastricht. Some 70% of Maastricht coffee shop customers are from abroad.

I agree with USBL the CS providers will push out all the weed stock they have and will probably rush harvests to make as much money as possible before it all goes down. Look forward to immature bud with no cure.
Also, another thing Im wondering IF the CAnnabis Cup goes off this year I wonder iF barney's and Greenhouse will still spend all that cash promoting the cup knowing they won't be able to recoup the costs on their over rated strains afterwards.....guess they can still sell seeds but I'm sure that green house and Barney's will be one of the shops to disappear with the new rules.

Supposedy Maastricht has shut down its entire shop population and around 400 jobs on the line at the moment. Other areas had no sign ups for the pass. Is this a sacrificial slaughter to save the others nationally - an accelerated decline of the whole coffeeshop infrastructure. ?

What happened to street dealers in Roosendaal etc when the wholesale closures of shops happened there some years ago?.

Year end in the Dam might be be looking sketchy - so a summer trip maybe for the last time.

Should be plenty of vacant apartments / hotels next year if this comes off - ? (with the Dutch economy looking worse than the Italian and the country about to loose its triple A rating) - and no doubt knock on effects on travel , resturaunts , general shops etc.

Not looking good for you guys...this plan is destined to fail. The locals dont want the weed pass either, not because they care about the tourist so much but because we don't want to register and 3 gram per day limit...what kinda lightweights they think we are!?

If i lived in the Netherlands i wouldnt register either. Why would you be restricted to 3g, and have the government and god knows who else know that you are a cannabis user? You would much prefer to go down the street and buy off someone else. Coffee shops are going to disappear soon i think. There will be very few of them left this time next year if this doesnt stop. Then they are back to where they were before the "legalised" coffee shops.

Booked for Dec. 23 - Jan. 2, if this thing is coming to an end, the wife and I want to be there.
Though I doubt anything is going to happen and it's just going to be another beautiful New Years Eve in the 'Dam.

Yesterday I read some more articles and saw some tv fragments about the situation in the south. An increase of street dealers, the police has no idea how to handle this, empty coffeeshops (grasscompany tilburg managed to get about 280 registered customers, but even the maximum of 2000 is not enough to keep that business running the way it was with 35 jobs provided).

Anyone know what happened to the CS that was the centre of attention on tuesday? Did the mayor of Maastrict manage to close the guy's shop down (which is what he insinuated he was after) or did was the threat hollow?
