The best rate was with the guilder!
1 us dollar got 2 guilder.... That's when Amsterdam was really affordable! ( a guilder bought what 1 euro buys today)

Rate went down a bit today.

Yeah the rate does look to have dropped a cent in the last day. Perhaps the olympics will at least stable things a little if not improve things futher.

1.25 in London - not bad at all ! (1.5 for a rip off Swiss frank!)

So I went to Thomas Cook at Marble Arch, and the bloke said €500 would cost £427. Wtf? OK, it went down slightly since yesterday, but surely not by that much?

So I said they quoted £400 over the phone. At which point he changed his tune said he could give me the 'VIP rate' – just under €1.25 to £1. When I asked why the discrepancy, he said that rate was for customers who were spending over £500 with TC.

But I'm not spending anything with TC apart from buying the currency, and even that wasn't £500. So – I'm wondering if there really is a VIP rate, or if he was just trying it on. It wouldn't surprise me if one of the exchange booths all over Oxford Street did that sort of thing, but it seemed a bit odd coming from Thomas Cook. Be warned.
