No one has mentioned the best, most convenient and healthiest (daytime) option. In fact the option that is special to the Netherlands. The harring sandwich! Cheap, very nutritious and above all FRESH.
If you go to New York have a hotdog. If you go to Amsterdam have a harring sandwich! There are places to buy them all over but off the top of my head at the top end of Singel canal (Centraal station end). Near Greenhouse Centrum on the canal and more than one place on Albert Cuyp market.
However bear in mind these are daytime options. At night you can indulge yourself at De Klos/burger bar/Wok to Walk/Vlamese frites etc safe in the knowledge you ate well during the day!
