2 stupid questions
2 stupid questions
Hey guys I have two questions I'd want to ask you, even if I'm pretty sure about the answer I need confirmation.
If I have clones under 24/0 hours of lights, will they turn to flowering if I pass them to 18/6 ?
If my plants in vegetating stage are getting 18h of lights per day (from 250W) and then when the lights turn off they still got a bit of light from a "distant" lamp is it bad for them ?

Hey,
These aren't stupid questions, but you do leave room for stupid answers...
Adding to what has already been stated...
Q. If I have clones under 24/0 hours of lights, will they turn to flowering if I pass them to 18/6?
A. No, all things considered. I grew clones last year, had them at 24hrs for a ten days, then switched them to 18hrs.
The reason for the change was because I didn't like how they were stretching. I hate stretching...
Q. If my plants in vegetating stage are getting 18h of lights per day (from 250W) and then when the lights turn off they still got a bit of light from a "distant" lamp is it bad for them?
A. No, it is not bad. But there is a reason for having a dark cycle - it enables the plant to rest. My opinion - it's not good to over stress a plant.
Happy farming...

Re: 2 stupid questions
18/6 is to save power or avoid "heat of the day". If you can veg 24 hours per day then do. They can rest when they're dead.

18/6 to save power.
Ok, sounds reasonable although the savings will probably be less than $1 per day. In all of the places where I've lived, the electric company charges two rates, high usage and low usage times. The high usage time is 0800-2000, and the low usage time is 2000-0800. From this perspective, keeping the light off six hours during peak times, and 12hrs during flowering as well, does save some money.
What about certain strains, particularly Sativa based, that have a tendency to stretch sometimes 3x taller when flowering? This sounds more plausible for an 18hr photoperiod.
There are a few breeders who provide a warning to growers ref. stretching that recommend vegging 18hrs, and in some cases they recommend skipping the veg altogether.
Avoid "heat of the day".
Ok, sounds reasonable as well, depending on how one is growing. I use a grow box, so the heat of the day is irrelevant, as is with most who use the box.
Also something to consider is where one is located, like AZLaker for example. He lives in AZ, which is damn hot in the summer. The A/C will be working hard enough, but add the heat from an open grow operation (he uses a grow box so it's irrelevant), but the point remains...
They can rest when they're dead.
Huh?

The OP was asking about switching to 18/6 from 24/24. I was suggesting there is no reason to switch to 18/6 except the two mentioned. If he is running 20K of veg then it makes a difference and as you said sometimes heat can be an issue and 6 hours of cool during the hottest period of the day also makes a great difference on a big scale. In a tent under one light those two factors don't apply so 24/24 will give the fastest growth. If he is trying to grow a pure sativa in a tent then I would recommend starting over. If they get a little stretchy then just tie the tops over and or add more blue light. The 12/12 trigger happens faster from 24/24 too as you may know. The cannabis plant does not need rest and is not stressed under 24/24 regardless of what you may have read. She is dead and resting when she is harvested. It was a joke. (insert stupid yellow spot thing here).
I was only offering my opinion without a long explanation. I have some experience and start a couple hundred clones every week.

My humble opinion is that in a tent or confined area, plant size matters.
From my limited experience, plants stretch considerably more under 24hrs than 18hrs, especially Sativas.
For a small personal grow at 18hrs, the plants will remain shorter and the internodal spacing will be closer. Something that I as a private grower want is more side branching because more branches equal more flowering tops. Then it's a matter of proper trimming.
Maybe in circumstances such as you mentioned with starting a couple hundred clones every week, ala SOG, where side branching isn't necessarily wanted or desired. Or, when time is of the escense because it's a commercial grow...
Although the OP didn't state how many plants, if growing in a tent or in a room with a 3m ceiling, I bravely assumed it's a small private grow.
Panog, any additional info on your grow op?
Happy farming...
Re: 2 stupid questions
I'm setting up a new grow at my new house, got 1 tent for flowering and 1 open space for veg, and the problem is that the electricity in this room only works when the ceiling lights (weak neons) are on (don't ask me why
)
So the veg space isn't directly under the light, it will only get a small leak of light, I definitively don't wanna grow then under 24/0, but after what you all said they won't mind a little light during their night

24 is the way to go.....don't show em darkness till they are ready

Re: 2 stupid questions
Tie the tops over and you will get all the side branching you want as the growth hormone is forced down in the plant. Also, adding more blue light while in veg will accomplish similar results. I grew in tents for many years also. Don't manicure the bottom of the plant very much until 2 weeks into flower. Then you know which tops will not produce much. Stake the plants so all tops get equal light for best results and don't flop over under bud weight. Keep a fan on everything to strengthen stems and prevent bud rot. (Insert stupid yellow spot here). 24/24 veg will get the best results quickest.Uncle Ron wrote:Ok...milehigh wrote:...I was only offering my opinion without a long explanation. Panog, you can't put a piece of tape over the switch, and leave the lights on?
Re: 2 stupid questions
Yeah I was planning to take the bulb out and leave the switch on, but that means that this way we won't have any light in the basement while the plants are sleeping. That's not a big problem but I was asking myself that maybe I could avoid that. I can't post pics of the place (i think you all understand why) but if I don't take the bulb out the plants will get a really small light... I think I'm gonna do some test. Anyway, the few clones I'm keeping under a 24H small neon won't flower when I'll put them in the veg room under 18/6H ?

Re: 2 stupid questions
I'm not sure it will help, the clones are a mk ultra (th seeds) and a pineapple express (g13 labs)
