I Love Rokerij, but I also nick-named them the "Hat Nazis".. I was waiting for them to start yelling at people walking down the street for wearing hats....

Can someone explain the whys and wherefores of this hat policy? I've also gotten yelled at (in the Dampkring) for wearing my ball cap (which I'm so used to wearing, it's like a second skin -- on top of my head). The bartender tried explaining to me that a hat obscures an individual's features. I was a bit discombobulated at the time and didn't respond, but I later decided that her answer didn't make sense -- unless there was camera surveillance inside the coffeeshop -- which also didn't make sense.

A friend of mine suggested that maybe she was referring to the public surveillance cameras perched atop traffic lights. Nope, still doesn't make any sense, unless the coffeeshop discriminates against unsavoury types who wear hats in an attempt to hide their faces (let's call this new phenomenon 'hat profiling'). Is this making any sense to you, because it still doesn't to me.

FWIW, the one guy I noticed who's always allowed to wear a hat in a coffeeshop is the runner who drops off the weed and darts back outside to dissolve back into the teeming hordes.

You don't wear hats INSIDE anywhere in Europe. When you do, really that shows no education. It's like a bum in your house... would you care yelling?

Erm... Hats can be worn wherever you like, how can it show no education because you wear a hat inside??? When you recieve a degree do you not go up and recieve your degree with a hat on your head??? if some1 getting a degree aint educated then who is...

I've never liked the "take off you hat" policy before the coffeeshop door is closed. Dont really see the problems with hats. Some people feel more comfortable with there hats on when around peope they dont know..

The notion that coffeeshops perform surveillance fills me with horror and resentment. I'm not saying that they don't but I can't fathom any legitimate excuse to monitor stoners. Please someone tell me one. I've already surrendered enough of my personal liberties by allowing myself to be photographed at traffic stops, airport customs, casinos, etc. -- why do harmless stoners chilling at a cs need to be surveyed? We're not carrying bombs on us, we're not sticking up the weedtender...wtf?

Titus, everyone going into a coffeeshop may not be a peaceful stoner. I used to think all stoners were peaceful, proggessive and tolerant. But that is far from the truth, theres those who smoke who still hold discrimination against other people just as with those who dont smoke. The 60's hippy values have unfortantl gone from some of those who smoke.....bummer.

Armed robbery, it happens in any city including Amsterdam...A coffeeshop is no different from any other shop when it comes to their own security, including cameras. Criminals do it, not tourists.

On the flip side to this thread I think a "Your least favorite customer" thread from the cities employees would be and interesting read.

You know I might buy this excuse were it not for the fact that armed robbery does not solely target coffeeshops as you say. Why don't diners, restaurants, and cafes in Amsterdam train cameras on their patrons as well? They stand an equal chance of being robbed as much as tourist coffeeshops and yet I've never been asked to remove my hat in an eetcafe. I'm sure that criminals pick their targets with an eye as to their vulnerability instead of any anti-smoking agenda.

Pisses me off that most cannabis tourists go to Amsterdam because they're hounded at home, only to find no privacy in a coffeeshop either.

You're not told to take your hat off in every coffeeshop only the ones that make alot of money, the same as any other busy business in town. They'll be the ones with the cameras cos criminals, as you say, pick their targets... and that'll be who....yup, the ones with money worth robbing. Ok no offense, but this still isn't convincing. I've never encountered the 'no-hat policy' anywhere other than a coffeeshop. Have you? And yet you want me to believe that the other commercial establishments that perform in-store surveillance have a laxer hat policy? Why would that be -- more sophisticated anti-hat software?

And I'm not aware of any statistical trend showing a rise in coffeeshop armed robberies over those of any other kind of establishment. If you could provide me with the data, I would be more credible of the 'no-hat' policy.

Yes, I know they're pointed at me -- that's exactly the problem I have with it.
