Oh trust me Braunezucker, I picked the Pig Downtown for that very reason (well, that and it's cheap, win-win 8) ). I guess my only concern with staying at the pig would be the amount (or lack) of sleep I get there, whether it be from partying guests or what-not. Would you say that once the bar closes or whatever that everyone basically starts to just crash or is the party there basically non-stop 24/7? Regardless of your answer, I'm more than likely still going to end up at the pig; it just sounds too good to miss.

I've stayed at The Flying Pig twice and the downtown location is lots of fun, however the smoking lounge is frequently full with no seats, usually leading me to have to smoke outside which isn't always optimal. Also, the partying slows down around 2 and by early morning (7-8 am?) the lounge is pretty empty with soft music playing making it a nice place to plan your day out on the free wifi before heading out.

Also, I hear Barney's is 21+ now. Hope this policy is relaxed for buy and flys as I've always been partial to their Sweet Tooth and occasionally Tangerine Dream. I'm 19 as well and I guess I'm lucky my last two visits were before Jan 1st when they supposedly implemented this.

Thanks washdc for the info, I hope that since it will kinda be the off season there that the lounge won't be as full as you've personally experienced. Hopefully Barney's won't try getting me at the door if I go there, or at least till I'm on my way out  . Either way, when this next paycheck comes in, I'm going all out on my expenses (passport, ticket to-and-fro, possibly the stay, etc.)

Because of ouirdeaux's comment, my next question is what museums cost money to go through? I'm interested in seeing the Anne Frank house for sure, the Cannabis Museum, the Torture Museum, the Van Gogh Museum, and maybe just a couple more. Does anybody know the current prices of visiting these specific museums or maybe even all of the museums in Amsterdam?

Matty, you keep saying that Barney's isn't worth the price for what you get. What would be some of the gear or places you say is best as far as effect, cost, etc.?

High prices indeed, but definitely not the worst you can find. I enjoy trying them at least once a visit. The best I've gotten consistently has been from Voyager's.

Also, to the OP about high season, last time I was there was nearly the same dates as you, Dec 20-29.

UPDATE: The tickets are purchased for the flights! I will be leaving America December 18th and arriving in Amsterdam the 19th at around 6 in the morning. Also, I will not be alone, as my twin brother has decided to join me on this expedition after weeks of me "geeking" about it. Our beds at the Pig Downtown are also reserved, so the only thing left to get is my passport (ironic, I know, since this should have been the FIRST thing to get, but I digress.) Let's keep our fingers crossed that 'Old Man Winter' doesn't rear his ugly head the day of both departures!

Walderp - I have to say that I'm so excited for you. You're gonna have such a blast!!! My first trip was in '06 with a good buddy of mine, and although we've been back twice, nothing even comes close to the first time we were there. All of the advice you got on this thread was spot-on. One of my biggest things is DO NOT GET STUCK IN THE COFFEESHOPS!!! I mean visit them-as many as possible, and do spend some time chilling in them- but for my money, there is no greater attraction than Amsterdam itself. Just walking the streets - and the further away from the center, the truer this is - is worth taking the trip for. Check out the open markets (not sure what these are like in December, tho) like the one in Albert Cuypstraat. Walk through the canal district at night...take a trip to Haarlem (15 mins. By train- and be sure to check out Willie Wortel's Coffeeshop, if only to support the owner's crusade against the weit-pass). Have a drink at the bar in the train station there-there's nothing like it. Eat at Cafe Klos, right by Dolphin's Coffeeshop, and enjoy some ribs that will blow your mind. Drink an ultra-cold Heinekin at Kadinsky bar, while you enjoy a nice bong full of the gear of your choice. Try some Jinever: the original form of Gin before the English made their own (pretty damn exceptional) version. (Don't touch the glass at first; if done properly, it will be filled over the rim, just held in place by surface tension-just sip from the glass as it sits in the bar first, then pick it up.) Challenge yourself to go a little farther than you originally had planned. Buy an inexpensive piece of art-you'll NEVER regret it. Check out how the Dutch do things just a little bit differently than they do in the states - the same pragmatism that gave rise to the tolerance policy in the first place is all around you, from the way every inch of interior space is used to its fullest to the way bikes are used as a major form of transportation. And by the way, if yoy're out and someone shady asks if you speak English, your best bet is to pretend you didn't hear or just feign ignorance-I know it sounds harsh, but answering "yes" will seldom turn out well -they just want your money. Try bitterballen if you get the chance. And keep an open mind when it comes to music; you'll hear all sorts of stuff in settings you may never have imagined...the new context may just change how you perceive whole genres of tunes. Definitely go to Amnesia, Grey Area, the original GreenHouse, Dampkring, and Barney's. You may find better weed, but these places really exemplify the Coffeeshop experience at the core, basic level - your own tastes will take you from there. Ok, I could go on, but my post already is borderline crazy, so I'll just leave you with this:when things don't go exactly as planned, or maybe you get ripped off for a few extra Euros by some dickhead bud-tender or waiter-DON'T SWEAT IT!! You're having the time of your life, so don't let anything trivial get in the way!
Have fun...

LA 2019, I don't mind the long post because it was all very informative. Thanks much. And FlyByNite I'll be leaving come 11am on January 3rd (I thought I wrote it in my last post, but now I see I had not. oops lol)

I do have a question about the Betty Boop juicebar: does it have decent gear at a fair price and how's the environment? I know this is like my most common question, but this trip as you can all imagine is breaking the bank, and I like to find quality stuff at a fair enough price.

Definitely couldn't recommend Flying Pig enough myself, sure you'll have a blast, go for a smaller dorm if you want a bit more peaceful night, but after all the fine weed/hash and a few drinks you'll probably find you're out like a light anyway, yeah, smoking room's hit n miss, but people come and go, so can normally find a space eventually. DJ every few days or so, the bar can get busier then, busiest 10pm-2am but normally after that the bar/smoking area gets less busy as people start to crash anyway.

Coffeeshops wise, there's the Blues Brothers literally just over the street a door or two down, and 420 less than 5 min walk, and many, many others with in like 10-15 min walk, it's a good central spot to be I've found.

UPDATE! For those who have been keeping tabs on my thread there is good news I have yet to share. First off, my passport is cozily sitting in my safety deposit box, as is my brother's, and they literally took less than a month to get. That being said, this trip is now 99.99% confirmed, the .01% being reserved for possible weather complications, any severe illness that might befall us, or death; otherwise, we're coming!

Here's a question that I've been wondering about: should I have my passport on me at ALL times? I mean sure when I'm out during the day and I'm not falling over myself I'll have it with me, but when trying to enjoy the night life I'm not going to risk it falling out of my pocket or something. From what I could find about Dutch law, officers can stop anybody over the age of 14 and ask for a form of ID; well, if it's at night and I don't have anything but my U.S. driver's license, do you guys think the cops would let me take them to the hostel to show them my actual passport? Also, what are some key differences about the police in Amsterdam/Netherlands vs. the U.S.; are my rights here about the same as they would be over there, or are there some things that I should know about before I accidentally make a wrong move?
