why do grey area or voyagers never win the cup??????
Some are of the opinion that the competition is rigged and coffeeshops pay High Times off to win. Personally I don't buy into that theory. I think there's a few different reasons why Barneys or Greenhouse always win. First is brand name recognition, They are essentiallly the Coca Cola and Pepsi of the coffeeshop scene. Secondly they pamper the judges with gift bags and free gear. And a third factor which alot of people probably don't think about is they breed their own entries. I think this effects some judges sub-conciously because they automatically think Barneys or Greenhouses new creation are the strains to beat. If you look at the results of the coffeeshop cup over the past ten years one might think that their strains are on an elite level that can't be touched. Barneys or Greenhouse has won every single time in the last ten years, however if you look at the indica and sativa cup results you get a much different picture. They've combined for only one win in those categories in the last ten years. How can this be you ask? The sativa and indica categories are judged by a seperate closed panel of judges that test the strains blindly with no name brand attached and no gifts or freebies to sway their vote. I see the results of these two cups as a much better indicator of what new strains truely are the best. Kosher Kush has won the indica cup the last two years, but when Voyagers entered it last year they ended up with a fourth place result. I think this is mostly due to brand name recognition since Voyagers is a newer shop that alot of cup goers don't know about. I think if the coffeeshop cup was turned into a blind test with no name brands attached just like the indica and sativa cup you would quickly see Barneys and Greenhouse strains are not as elite as some cup goers think they are.
+1... nicely stated.

Hey Panog, seems the budtender you spoke with doesn't even know his own gear.

What a post! Thank you sir.

Have to agree with you on most of that. Perhaps even all of it.

I'd like to offer my 2 cents also......

The times I've been to Barney's to try their cup winners they have been really good. Even great. Tangerine Dream when I had it there 2010 was really good. Dr Grinspoon has been great every time I've been there. What a wonderful weed to vape in the morning. The best clear sociable positive high and very long lasting. Amazingly so at times.

Liberty was not as outstanding as the other two but it was still very good weed although I'll wager there could have been slightly better weeds in the contest but Barney's shaded it on name recognition.

Also despite not really liking to pay their prices they are a pretty good bet early in the morning as they open at 7am. I've never had a problem there at all ever. The budtenders have always been helpful, friendly and cheerful. The food and drink guy is a bit of a grump but that is a minor issue. Just buy the 3eu drinks when they tell you and vape that DrG. They also sell 1/2 grams.

Despite all the above I always try and avoid the place unless they specifically have a cup winner in there I have not tried. Then just can't resist. Managed to avoid going that way at all last time.

ps -just had a little home made iso oil. Wow this shit is strong!

I had Tangerine Dream from Stones as well. It was cheaper. Same flavour, but not anywhere near as strong.

ok first Barneys wins cause they give away a bunch of free stuff,

and about Voyagers never winning the cup, cause they dont enter
even with out entring the up they still got write in votes and came in 4th or so with the kosher (would have won if they entered imo)

not everyshop in Amsterdam enters the cup, i would say maybe 20-25 shops enter maybe less this year
