After reading all the crap that came with my new passport yesterday like we are all supposed to but most never do etc I noted that the UK passports now include a chip and can be used as a e-passport meaning they can be used at airports that have automated immigration gates.

I quick google says Schipol was supposed to have had them last year?. Can anyone confirm the automated immigration gates are in use at Schipol a d does anyone use them to know if it really does avoid the need to que at the regular immigration gates when arriving?.

hay there, i used em at gatwick which i know wasn't your question, would say that they're slower as you still have to line up and wait your turn before you go up to the machine,

Then I'm confused (which is not hard lol) as I thought immigration is for arrival not departure?.

When you fly into AMS you get checked by immigration. There were some machines down the left side but were not in operation when I arrived last. (end of July 2012)

Anyone used them yet?

I gather they work by scanning your biometric chip in the passport and verify the person by the machine scanning both the face and the eyes?. To be honest I don't know when the UK started issuing the e-passports but I read none of the airports in Europe had them installed before last year. But if they are working when I get there in 19 days am gonna give them a go if they work for incoming flights and there are no lines of people waiting to use them.
