DAY 6 (Friday the Thirteenth!)

Started the day off right with a joint of Cheese from Solo on my may to the train. The warm fuzzy stone of the cheese made the walk through the rain almost enjoyable. Geen probleem the Dutch say and I was prepared for rain with my rainjacket and my stinky cheese :P

Got off work around 7pm, Metro back to Central and take the convenient “back exit” that dumps you almost directly at Voyagers. I find Voyagers is great for that after work smoke – great people watching from the big skinning table, great buds on offer at decent prices, and a top bloke behind the counter in the form of Highly Blessed. :D

Tonight’s purchases? 1 gram El Cid 13.50 euro. 1 gram Wild Amnesia 10 euro and 1 orangina 2 euros

I sat down at the aforementioned skinning table and rolled the wild Amnesia first. As I ground it up I enjoyed the views and smiled at the tourists gawking into the windows once they realized they were looking in a coffeeshop. The Amnesia seemed promising in the grinder…sticky sticky buds with that classic Amnesia smell, but in the end not much taste in this batch and a mild sativa effect according to my notes. I’d give it a 6.5/10.

Have I mentioned yet that so far the weather has been mainly shit? At the end of my trip, I counted 12 out of 13 days where it was raining. As in, raining when you wake up, when you are walking to work, raining when you come home, etc. ...in July! The local Dutch I talked to were saying that they basically hadn't had a real summer yet. But on some days, as sunset draws near, there are a few hours when the sun will peek out below the rain clouds and the city turns golden. It makes the city magical and no doubt inspired painters in the city centuries ago. It’s that same magic that drives me out of Voyagers and back to my hotel to pick up my camera. I wave good by to Highly Blessed and head out.

Camera in hand, I wander through the canals in the Oude West…

After an hour or so of walking and enjoying Amsterdam, I was ready to just chill in a comfy spot, I made my way down the beautiful Herengracht and dropped in at Amnesia. The shop was busy but not too crowded, no problem getting a seat at one of the comfy bench seats they have there. Warm welcome from the budtender as I looked over the menu. On his recommendation I gave the Laughing Buddha a try as I’ve not had this strain before and it smelled and looked very nice in the tub when presented. On my way back to my table I also ordered a Limonana from the bar. (side comment on the Limonana – not sure if folks at this place aren’t all trained to make this drink consistently but they seem to have gone downhill lately – not to mention now costing 3 euro instead of 2.50)

Sat down and while rolling up the Laughing Buddha I started off with a previously rolled joint I’d made from a mixed salad of sativa leftovers from my purchases so far on this trip. I finished rolling the Laughing Buddha for later, and then rolled up a 1g cone of the El Cid Kush purchased earlier from Voyagers. This was to be my nightcap so I wanted some knock out indica to put me down nicely.

The El Cid had an incredibly dank smell while I was breaking it up and upon firing it up I was rewarded with an incredibly expansive but smooth smoke. Very very nice. Halfway through the joint started to really feel that warm body stone coming on, a warm fuzzy blanket wrapping around me. One of the nicest indicas of the trip, I’d give it a 9/10. Sorry no pic I smoked it all!

Well and truly BAKED, I headed out into the Amsterdam night, making my way up the sleepy Singel to my bed…

Sweet dreams everyone…

DAY 7 (Saturday July 14th):

Progress on the work front had been such that working a full day on Saturday was not required this time around, which meant I had a leisurely morning before I’d have to go in and work for a few hours. I took advantage of this by sleeping in until 10 am, something that, having kids, I never get to do anymore at home. After waking up it was a long hot shower followed by light breakfast at the hotel. Ready for a coffee and a smoke, I headed over to De Kuil for both.

This time around the Neville’s Haze smelled a little better so I went with 1 gram of Nevilles @ 13 euros along with 1 gram of 420 Kush (12 euros). Cappucino here still a relative bargain for the centrum at only 2 euros. While I enjoyed my coffee I rolled and smoked the Neville’s Haze, which was a nice smoke with a decent high. Not nearly as good as my last visit in March but still a solid 7/10. Next it was time to do bong hits of the Don Tangelo that I’d bought at Voyager’s earlier in the week. This was an interesting hybrid stone, definitely more on the indica side but with some sativa effects to boot.

Don Tangelo - Voyager's:

After 420 I wandered westward through the centrum, killing time until Grea Area opens at 12 noon. First I did a little shopping for the wife, picking up a healthy supply of chocolates from Puccini. By the time I was finished there Grea Area was open so I walked across the street and entered. I was happy to see John was working, he greeted me warmly and gave me a fist bump as I approached the counter.

Looking to try something new I went for the Mako Haze, a strain I’ve never tried before, 1 gram at 13 euros. In addition I had to get some of those lovely Grey Crystals, ½ gram for 11 euros. John was nice enough to toss in a Looza and a freshly cleaned bong for my use. Settling in at the end of the counter and smoked bowls of Mako Haze + Grey Crystals while I chatted with John about my visit so far and life in general. Several bong loads later I was ready for work on a Saturday afternoon. I said farewell to John and took a leisurely walk across town to the Nieuwemarkt Metro station and from there down to the Arena stop and a short walk to work.

After a solid afternoon's work that was enough and I headed out. Still being relatively early evening it was time to visit De Pijp for a stroll and a visit to one of my favorite shops there, De Graal. I had to wait for a few minutes in the anteroom as some happy ladies made their selections from the menu. Once it was my turn I greeted the budtender warmly as I perused the list of what was available. First got 1 g of Amnesia Haze, De Graal usually has very good examples of this stain so I went for that again. Then I saw at the top of the menu what was billed as a powerful sativa “Super High Rise”. It was relatively pricey for De Graal at 13 euros per gram, but it looked and smelled amazing so it was 1 gram of that as well. Purchases taken care of I was buzzed into the shop proper and made a beeline for the super comfy upstairs area with a view out the back window. Settled down at one of the plush couches and began to skin up the Super High Rise.

This bud was impressive right out of the bag, with an incredible smell and appearance. The buds left my fingers covered with sticky resin as I broke it up and packed it into a pure cone. The smoke was equally nice, appeared to have been cured very well and very smooth. A few minutes later I was rewarded with a VERY up sativa high, my mind was expanding and as I rode this high into the stratosphere I knew I’d be buying more of this weed on the way out. This was the weed of the trip for me, a 10/10!

De Graal – Super High Rise:

I enjoyed the stone from the fine product and the vibe of this great shop, just chilling out and listening to folks talk quietly to each other in various foreign languages. This place has a great locals feel, with quiet but friendly staff and plenty of room to spread out.

While I was sitting in the shop I went ahead and rolled up the Amnesia Haze for later. This was a solid example of the strain, I’d rate it 8/10, again well cured with a solid Haze stone.

Bought 2 grams more of the Super High rise on the way out. Took a nice walk through De Pijp enjoying the peaceful side streets of this neighborhood.

My notes for Saturday kind of end here but I think you can guess the rest: more smoking, more walking, more picture taking….
