There's no way a lighter offers complete combustion- there are definitely residual petrol chemicals in the smoke from a butane lighter. You can see the difference in the residue on the inside of my glass pieces already.

So, you think it's healthier to smoke with a lighter? Interesting- is this just based off of personal experience or is there any research you can point me towards?

Makes sense. I cannot taste the butane, but my bowls taste better with the hempwick. I want to get stoned AND play with candle wicks  But I'm a bit of a pyro. (I got a kicking butane torch for nail hits and I am an absolute terror with that thing. :D )

Fortunately, both Dr. Melamede and Dr. Shackelford seem to agree that it is safe. “I looked through the National Library of Medicine database on this, and there isn’t any evidence that inhaling residual hydrocarbons like butane are dangerous – at least in small amounts,” says Dr. Melamede. “It’s an irritant, but that’s about it.....yawn...2 of the best..i know stuff  next

Take C4H10 introduce O and spark = fire( sing the fire song of choice here) the by products of combustion are CO2 and H2O the same thing you exhale when breathing plus what ever else is in the atmosphere.

Bong- this is in no way directed at you- I like arguing with you, and agree that most people agree with you.

When I read this BHO article yesterday this argument really bothered me so I might as well have my wee rantlet.

This logic, that I hear all the time about human consumption of man made chemicals is insane.
"We have no evidence that it's dangerous, therefor it must be safe." (By the way, the caveat there- "in small amounts" means that they do have evidence that they are dangerous in large amounts.)

I feel like evidence of safety is required before I will comfortably ingest man-made chemicals. I actually know some of the people at the EPA who make determinations about what "safe levels" of chemicals constitute, and they don't actually mean "safe"- they mean that the social benefits of that chemical outweigh the amounts of harm done to individual bodies. While that seems to be an ok standard of what we allow societally, it seems a piss-poor metric to use to judge the safety of your individual consumption. I know I feel REALLY differently about this than most people, but these days 40% of Americans are going to get some form of cancer in their lives, so I feel comfortable moving away from the herd on this issue.

Yes, willjay, that is complete combustion. Incomplete combustion means that unless the butane is perfectly atomized, O can not get to every molecule of C4H10 so some of is remains to be inhaled.

Thanks Cisco for topping, this reminded me to answer Geekymonkey. BOOM, gas either burns or doesn't. Temperature is the difference that you are feeling, not the by products of combustion at least from the fire source the other by products are what we are all seeking

ps: I prefer matches
