If the police perform a random search of a coffeeshop, and there is someone without proper ID, the shop could be closed. By asking everyone for proof of age, the shop is covering its ass so to speak.

I have no problem with that....some shops choose not to card customers....thats a risk they run in the event of a search by authorities.
The police told me it was only about age!!
and i have been in 2 controls as they call them.
and the coffeeshop can not be closed if someone doesnt have ID it is nothing to do with the shop.
only if there is under 18.
If the police sent a 55year old in a coffeeshop and bought weed without an id check, they cant be charged with anything as they have broken any rules.
When i say police i am on about the coffeeshop control unit.
Or has the law change in the last few months.
all the best

The law doesnt say the coffeeshop has any

I said "could be" not "will be". Certainly the searches about quantity control and age....but not having proper id is a violation of the law NL....and an easy reason for authorities to hassle shop owners

The Dutch Government introduced compulsory identification in January 2005. Everybody over the age of 14 is required to show a valid identity document to police officers and other law enforcement authorities on their request. See Local Laws and Customs.

I have no problem with showing my ID im just paranoid about carrying a passport around and getting it stolen or lost. What happens if u dont have a passport and just a US drivers license and get stopped? Do i go to jail? Will I be able to go to my hotel and show them my passport?

well i say cant get hastle
Well 3 coffeeshop workers and 3 policemen tell me (up to now) i might get a fine but the coffeeshop has no responsibility for a customer to abide by the ID law no more than a super market or bar.
so they can not get into any hastle at all acording to police and coffeeshop owners/workers i have asked today.i am going to ask 7 more to see if i get a 10 out of 10 answer on this and will post back.results soon.
best wishes to all

yes we have!
as im sure ftcarer can confirm that the police have been asking for peoples id during coffeeshop controle, regardless of age
the law states
On 1 January 2005, the Compulsory Identification (Extended Scope) Act came into force. Since that date, anyone aged 14 and over must be able to produce an original valid identity document and carry it with them at all times. Failure to produce an original, valid identity document is a criminal offence.

if there is any possability of the police giving us problems because a customer dosent have id,then we will check
this WILL come into force in ALL half decent shops in the near future

blessssssss
Thats good enough for me....better to be safe than sorry is the approach being taken by Voyagers.

High all.
Well if you are right about coffeeshop owners having responsibility for all customers complying with the ID law.
11 dutch coffeeshop owners/workers are wrong when they say "of course not!!"
when asked that question
sibire
De Supermarkt
republic
anyday
green house centrum
barneys
rusland
willie wortals harlem
anytime alkmaar
420
free world
i have allso had a conversation with 2 difrent amsterdam police coffeeshop control unit members(AS they are known.)And they both said "of course not"!!
the second one a very nice guy even surprised me when he said
"actualy I am not even allowed to ask you for your ID in this case !!!"
HE explaned this in law as he "had to have a reason to suspect i had comited a crime!! and as i (possibly like just cause in the USA)am almost 3 times round the clock for 18 age was not an issue. So he would have no legal power in this case.
AND wow
he would have to backup the reason for his id request if i questiond it.!!!!!

They allso told me i didnt need to carry my passport as long i had my UK euro endorsed photo driving licence. So all euro zone ID cards and photo driving licencess are ok.
and i keep the passport safe under lock and key.
didnt ask about outside euro zone docs so cant say if US driving docs or ID cards are ok.
I agree that coffeeshop customers should be aware of the rules about coffeeshops
(i hope to get a copy of them soon)AS there are some rules that do apply to coffeeshops that dont apply to pubs and other buisnesses like only having limited stock ect.But the ones we need to know about, are things like not littering making noise and parking in the corect
places as the shop can be be closed for these violations.
All the best all
