However, it's not just about weed and Amsterdam, at least not the last time I looked.

Guilty your honour , but I'm around enough to know whats cooking here; but thats an interesting observation, and I think it illustrates how much and how fast communication techniques and styles are evolving. I see my young grandchildren touch typing, my wife had to go to secretarial college to learn that , they just talk with their fingers, and for some of the younger kids I reckon a forum is a bit old skool now and a place for info rather than a social life . The facebook phenomena. I dont do it, I dont understand it, I'm too old and I'm quite capable of making an ass of myself on a forum where at least I can edit my more loony ramblings.

I'm on a VW forum, for the obvious reason, and it like the ACD has a lively social aspect to it, members swapping tales and banter, meeting up and getting on down with their buses but it is, again like the ACD about the pooling of knowledge. However I feel some people approach it like a commercial help desk, question, question, question and off they go with no feed back till the next time they need to fix something.

Well it hasn't changed to a knitting enthusiasts forum in the year or so I spent away from here, and given the name, as well as the other content hosted here, I get the distinct impression that the main topic on this website is Amsterdam and weed.

The simple fact is that the proposed laws affect us as international travellers, and the very reason for this site and community existing, so whilst it is still a very real threat, people naturally create threads about it. I agree, lots of threads on the same topic all over the boards can be annoying, but if someone has just dropped $3000 or more on a trip, it is wholly reasonable for people to be very concerned and in need of advice, let's remember that people join this site every day.

So what's the solution? Simple. Create a separate topic, place all threads related to the laws in it, and direct people to it when they ask. Then we have all the threads in one place, nice and neat and tidy, and those who have any problem with these threads need not view them unless they are out to cause trouble.

Talks between the right-wing VVD and Labour party PvdA on forming a new government are as good as completed, Nos television reports on Monday.

A final agreement may be reached by the end of this week or beginning of next, Nos says, quoting sources from both parties.

Labour and the VVD have been negotiating about a new coalition for the past month after both parties emerged as the big winners in the September general election.

Various names are already circulating for potential ministers and many pundits expect Labour to be given the foreign affairs ministry job.

Plans

The two parties have already agreed to scrap the planned tax on travel expenses and the fine for slow students. The tax on insurance will be doubled to pay for this.

They also plan to abolish student grants and give local councils more powers to decide whether or not to allow shops to open on Sunday.

The Financieele Dagblad says on Monday insiders also expect the new coalition to ditch the outgoing government's plans to reform mortgage tax relief and develop instead a phased reduction in the tax break for all mortgage holders.

Financial effects

The VVD took 41 seats in the September vote and Labour won 38, giving the tentative coalition a majority of four seats in parliament.

Once agreement between them has been reached, it will be assessed by the government’s macro-economic advisory body CPB for the likely effect on the economy and individual spending power.

The VVD justice minister needs to be shitcanned ASAP in the new coalition. He is a hardliner prohibitionist and will push the wietpas all the way if left in power.

Sorry to be 'negative' but while i was in Ams 2 weeks ago, the guy i spoke to who worked in Siberie did not give me much confidence that the new laws would be scrapped. I am praying he is wrong as i cannot live without the coffeeshops and the excitement that comes with going to that wonderous city.

My only hope if the ban does come in on 1st Jan is that it isn't inforced in Amsterdam (or at least a blind eye is turned) in a similar way to the no tobacco rule

That article says that although they are relaxing the laws, foreigners will still be banned.. which is, unfortunately, how I think this will play out.

The Dutch opposition to the pass centred mainly around registering and the 2000 members/shop limit. It looks like the revised pass idea will remove these caveats so, in theory, the Dutch electorate is happy. Why (apart from the coffeeshop owners and anyone involved in cannabis tourism) would any Dutch citizens really give a shit about whether foreigners can smoke in their country??
