i thought it was a abraxas?!??! who knows?Cisco wrote:Roccy Tittzenbeer wrote:Cheers for that,Cisco wrote:Awesome thanks , what is that Coffeeshop on the corner of the Singel ? Iv walked past sooo many times and never thought of going in
the clues are in the notes before and after the photo .
"no oscar for the winner" and "is that the real Hollywood?" Hollywood is the Coffeeshop da da
Very basic plain shop and OK, Moroccan looking bud-geezer sometimes seems a bit abrupt but he is OK and will give you free lights, papers, and use of a bong (if you are sure you want to smack your lips on it when you see it in daylight)the choice of veg is quite small but there is always something decent to sample at fair prices - a fifteen minute drop in won't do any harm.
Sometimes we're guilty of chasing the top recommended herbs at the "in-places" and miss so many other things and experiences.
Enjoy yersen'

Ha ha i thought that , but wasnt sure lol , iv never noticed any Name on it at all , and I remember a photo of that coffeeshop being in a book I had years ago .

Night of the 15th - sliding through the shadowy alleys of 'the Ripper'
..... and so yours truly drifts off into the dimly lit passageways of victorian London, scenes of the Whitechapel murders!!!! O.K. so I have a vivid imagination and this is Amsterdam but it still gives me that kind of fantasy feel of Jack the Ripper walking down the empty cobbled streets with each footstep echoing.
I love this kind of spooky stuff and it's not 'really' that scary but adds to the fun.
The temperature is dropping and there are now small puffs of mist each time I exhale, turning right to the side of the Church (jfyi currently exhibiting Andy Warhol Pink collection) the bright lights of the fair quickly disappear and the tranquility and inky blue night of the narrow streets draw me in.
I slow down to a sauntering pace, zip up my jacket to protect against the chill breeze and prepare for a 'ghostly' walk in the shadows
Now my eyes have adjusted to the light (or lack of it) I get out my camera and decide to have a go at night photography, fumbling to find the feckin' settings buttons on the camera I can't work out what to do cos' I am a techno-fukwit anyway (I suppose the earlier consumption of alcohol and herb might not be helping
) I have a go on an automatic setting that doesn't flash and point at the target, click, looks a bit dim but gives a great and accurate representation of the mood.
Here it is .. I was quite pleased when I saw it later... you getting a feel for the place yet?

Just around the corner there are a couple of coffeeshops, Barraka and Soft Temple - dare you go there after dark????
Barakka looks quite inviting by night, not too brightly lit, almost empty and atmosphere relaxed, and there are still some tables outside too. Again another decent and somewhat overlooked shop that sells good enough gear for my taste anyway, think I got some white widow but could be wrong, it was well cured and nice flavoured.
To give it a label I would describe it as a North African type of place

after a short sit and toke time to move back off into the night, two doors on there is Soft Temple which is closed so I decide to take a pic anyway. This time I forget to alter the setting and the bloody thing flashes into the night, just behind me a startled bloke jumps out of a doorway with wide open eyes like a scared rabbit. He takes one look at me and scurries off (I think he had pissed on his leg when he had jumped
)
Good thing is the flash had illuminated the shop and window so you can see the bongs etc on the window ledge.

and then here is another pic in the true darkness when I had f.cked off the flash thing.

Want to move on to another location, so camera pocketed and off we go up north....
more snippets to follow....

Nice shots Rocky -Seems we were there at the same time ...We were watching the erections on Dam Square ourselves
But then we saw Mata Hari duck into a moonlit alley and followed her to CS New Times...

Loving the report and all the pictures- thanks!
Because life is too short to smoke bad bud.
Re: Notsober in October
that first pic in your last post roccy is really lovely, makes me missing amsterdam so much
Re: Notsober in October
Love the pics rocky, they go along way to capturing the specialness that is Amsterdam. I strolled the same route myself recently, love Barraka.

Re: Notsober in October
Thank you once again for your kind words...
and meanwhile .. in night time Gotham City ....
having left the Dam area and having spent maybe an hour otherwise engaged enroute
I emerge at the north end where I was earlier in the day.
By night the area takes on a different look and feel, I am like a moth drawn in by the light and zero in on Coffeeshop Resin which now takes on a green glow enhanced by green shades, green woodland walls, green shop sign and subdued lighting - so out with the camera and click.
Not bad and taken at an angle in case the flash goes off and I startle everyone.
Yep - success

The budtender is an attractive young blonde haired lady and she could sell me anything
and I am soon lolling around on a soft cushioned seat. Herb n hash from here is usually good and I have never been disappointed, tonight is no exception, good variety of different weeds and hashes at varying prices - see FBN's CoffeeshopMenu site - so - get in there and try the wares for yourself! Nice and clean too by the way.
After my 'brief encounter' back into the street and wow - bright lights - unbelievable blaze of blue neon from Moondrop Energy Point, what a contrast. Place for 'shrooms and stuff, not for me but here's a pic anyway.

Something's gone to my head (surprise surprise) so not going too far for a while, just a bit further and we see the re-vamped front of Freeworld Coffeeshop. It's one of the internet type coffeeshops and although smart and has plenty of screens and techi stuff not my cup of tea.
Don't go in so take a couple of pics for posterity, maybe someone else will dive in for one on another trip to check it out
From this side....

...and from the other side.... nice of the pretty blonde to smile at me yumm

Hang on, looking back I've bypassed somewhere I wanted to visit, just caught sight of it, it is ... Double Reggae
I've meant to give this a go for a few years and it looks OK tonight.
Due to the excitement don't steady the camera too well and this is the outcome, reflects how happily out of focus I'm feeling too...
Apologies for the blur.

Camera away and with some reggae mix beats getting louder and closer I'm off in so bye for now....

Re: Notsober in October
... following a nice warm in Double Reggae followed by a few pots of ale in nearby Stoute Bar (I think) it is time to take a steady stroll back into the centre nearer base camp. Cut through the alleys and onto Damrak again, careful of those sneak-up-on-ya trams mind, and head past the moorings for the canal cruise boats and turn towards the big multistorey Grasshopper Coffeeshop.
Must say it looks well at night with the illuminated window canopies and lighting, won't be going in though. Turning a quick right down the back street and halfway down on the left is the bright green and orange sign for Coffeeshop Babylon. As I get nearer I can see it is closed, not been here before so thought I would give it a try, I assume it is actually operational but just closed this evening, maybe another time then, but possibly not missing much anyway.
Light on but nobody in

so back up the street and hang a quick right, then a right at Baba Coffeeshop then into view across Warmoestraat is Sheeba Coffeeshop. Once upon a time this was a favourite of mine and did great muffins and brownies, over the last few years I have noticed a decline all round but going to give it a go again.
The shop still looks the same from the outside and the lights draw me in and this is what happened.
First job is to get some cakes for a friend and his lady, at the coffee and cakes bit I asked the young lady about the sweet stuff and how strong they are. The muffins were apparently 'not very strong' so bought 2 each for both of my friends on the proviso they had one and then waited an hour before having the other (they are canna virgin so being cautious here)
The girl was certainly not exagerating, in fact my friends ate both and felt no effects at all, so over 20Euros spent for nowt
so be warned don't waste your money in Sheeba for buns!
.. so over to the bud counter to see what's going on.
I know this guy a bit from over the years and he is OK, I view the menu and then have a chat with him.
As I am on the hoof I decide to buy some hash, checked one or two tubs and chose some very tasty oily Nepalese price maybe 13E / g can't be sure and on the assumption it was the same stuff a pre-rolled Nepalese strong hash/tobacco mix joint for 7.5E to walk with.
Before wandering off and following a quick and 'crunchy' roll of the spliff between finger and thumb, I asked him about the pre-rolled joint as to it's age and contents. Immediately I knew by his vague response that it could have been sitting around a while, so when I pressed him further accompanied by a meaningful stare he offered me my money back which is fair enough - so dodge or at least check first the pre-rolls at Sheeba.
Not all bad though, the very good news is that the Nepalese hash was excellent
and the coffee is great too.
As a place I used to have an affection for I was more disappointed but there you go, it's moved down my list now and off to pastures new.
Here's a pic.

so off for a walk and a beer, a quick right again up the street passing Baba Headshop (there's a sale on right now if you are in town) and another right passing along until I reach Cafe Corso on the corner for a beer and rest room moment.
Tidy (non-smoking) bar on the edge of the RLD, very clean, music, lights, big Screens, nice selection of drinks and the best Men's Room ever in all the bars - Hot Tip - almost 5 Star hotel standard, if your fussy then this is the place and worth paying for a drink to use it.
Necked a small beer and then onwards, going to head down to the quiet Basjoe area via the RLD to see if there are any signs of life.
The RLD is quite busy and there are lots of things to see and do
Errrm I'll get back later.
Cheers,
RTnB

Re: Notsober in October
after a few distractions along the way
I emerge in Nieuwmarket near the Jolly Joker and head towards Basjoe. The coffeeshops I pass have a smattering of customers, Jolly Joker sees a jolly bunch having a laugh, HSBoTM has a few sitting outside and so on, take a peek in Goa and there is a team of 4 sitting each side but nobody else.
The canals and streets are set out in grids and depending on which way the wind is blowing gets you in the end, unfortunately it's chilly and blowing my way.
As the various narket area shop lights disappear behind me I get closer to the quieter and darker Basjoe area, very soon I spy 'em Bagheera and Basjoe side by side, still with their nice outdoor seating (both empty this cold night).
First is Bagheera with just a small group using in the window area, I get my camera and set it again, thankfully no flash
Bagheera with a few customers

Basjoe with maybe one figure

and both of them from the bridge with bikes and tables for good luck.

Nothing very inspiring going on and getting a bit chilly so legging it for somewhere warmer and a bit of hot food.
on the way just around the corner is Rusland (Russian Land), not a lot going on here either, empty tables etc.

So heading back to the Dam for a beer and a bite.
An hour later and finally to bed and I've saved you a sizzling slice of Pepperoni and Cheese Pizza for supper. bubbling hot cheese, crispy crust and spicy hot pepperoni mmm, but your not getting my Nepalese nightcap

Good night all.
Maybe more from me another day.
