Hey perry welcome from a fellow Scotsman
My tips are as follows..

Always tip for good service it's generally expected,
If you want to use tobacco in your spliff check if its ok ( some places have seperate rooms for tobacco) and always keep your cigarettes/tobacco out of view,
You shouldn't wear a hat in coffeeshops as a general rule,

Don't forget to try a febo ( it's an experience lol)

Keep your camera/phone in your pocket while in the red light district

Try to check out the rooftop view from NEMO it's the big green building to right of central station that looks like a ships hull.. Good place to chill outside

Watch out for bikes and trams when anywhere near a road i nearly get run over every time and ive been going for 15 years lol you'd think I'd learn.. Stoner lol
If carlsburg made weed it would be northern lights 5x

Hi mate. If you arrive at centraal station and want to use the trams. Goto the white wooded building outside opposite on the main concours. This is the main tourist office in Amsterdam and they will be able to help you. Here is a link reg tram tickets. http://en.gvb.nl/ovinmamsterdam/Pages/bestdeal.aspx .Also remember to swipe your ticket as you get on and off the tram. Oh stay away from the blue lit windows in the redlight district. Even better stay away from the redlight district, it's only till you've been there you realise how shit it is lol. Happy Toking.
Next trip 1st August 2015. 2 weeks camping/putting my feet up.

Cheers for the advice tdw. My hostel is on the edge of the RLD so I'm likely to see a small part of it.
