'Wietpas' costs Maastricht €500,000 in lost income

Tuesday 06 November 2012

Maastricht council has lost out on over €500,000 in fines and parking tickets, mainly as a result of the marijuana or 'wiet' card, a council spokesman confirmed on Tuesday.

Since cannabis cafes were closed to tourists on May 1, 4,000 fewer fines have been imposed at a loss of €200,000. Parking tickets are down 140,000, which accounts for €340,000.

The spokesman was reacting to reports in Limburg newspapers on the effect of the pass system, which has turned cannabis cafes into members-only clubs, says the Telegraaf.

In September, Maastricht mayor Onno Hoes said locals should no longer have to formally register as users to buy soft drugs from the city's cannabis cafes.

Since then, the new coalition government, sworn in on Monday, has decided to scrap the registration system for locals and find an alternative way of dealing with drugs tourists.

Thx...
This is only for parking and moving vehicle violations, wait until the figures are reported for hotels, restaurants, retail shops, etc...
These figures are the ones that may rock the local and national governments.
Most figures should be out sometime early next year, however there are business entities that report quarterly. This information (2nd and 3rd Qtr) should be available now.
I really don't give a shitte either way, so I won't be searching for this data and posting links. I suspect for those that do, they will discover RED numbers across the board.

The statistical area I'm mostly interested in will be crime. I want to know how effective the Dutch Governments anti drug measures have been since May 1st.
I want the Dutch people to see what their "will" has cost them, in terms freedom as well as $$$$$. Let them see failure... :(

I dont think it will impact the border towns too much, assuming it's mostly buy and fly and half a mill is a price to pay for some sunday morning sanity in the city streets .

And I think the police will get a handle on the small time street dealing too.

I mean if you are in business in Belgium, France or Germany and you buy in Holland you wont be trawling the streets looking for it. I'm sure they deliver for a good customer. :D

Just a realistic observation of the situation down south really. The citizens have their weed and their streets back, I expect they're happy enough.
What a long strange trip it is.

I agree mostly with what you wrote spidergawd, however...
... there may have been a lot of buy and fly, but as one of those people   I also spent money elsewhere while in town.
Rarely did I drive the 6ish hours (round trip)just to buy and fly. The timing would see me having lunch in Maastricht, Venlo, or Eindhoven.
If the weather were nice, a bit of sightseeing would be in order, perhaps something to snack on, maybe something in a shop catches my fancy...

Home bud deliveries (oily balls as well), now that's something I could handle...

If the locals are happy, I'm happy for them, it's THEIR home after all.... something I've been touting all along. SELF GOVERNANCE!!!

I'm sure that is not their main consideration, but if that is the amount of revenue that comes just from weed tourists parking in the wrong place, general spending in this provincial town's economy must be considerable.
