Good decarboxylation article

Post by geekymonkey »

Yay science. I'm sharing this because I know I'm not the only geek here.

They actually did testing! :) And there's a list of all of the active compounds in mj and their boiling points!

So after readng this article i have a question....

If i want to smoke or vape my kief, is it best to decarb it in oven first, then vape it or smoke it?

This article makes me think the potency and effects will be increased fro, the decarb...correct?

I think the article is for the edibles crowd, but I could be mistaken...
I don't see how it would make kief any stronger when the temps of smoking or vaping would remove the acid regardless...

Edit: From the article...
"Throughout the half hour the temperature rose and fell several times for no apparent reason but stayed between 229° and 245° Fahrenheit."
I wonder if the author is a stoner?
I won't insult my fellow brothers and sisters on this forum about why I thought this was funny, you'll figure it out.

Friendly continuation of the discussion... :)
How so?
The purpose for decarbox., as I understand, is to remove the acid which is blocking the narcotic (medicinal) effects of THC when taken orally in the form of edibles.
As I understand the article, and additional research as well, decarboxylation removes the acid THCA (Tetrahydrocannabinolic Acid), leaving THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol). A method (also described in the article) to remove the acid is by using temperatures below the point of vaporization (the temp. of the lit end of a joint, a lit bowl, or flame is significantly higher). The material mentioned in the article, tincture, it is added to edibles (cannabutter for example). If using heat in the process of cooking, the temps will be kept below vape temp or else there wouldn't be any THC (up in smoke, er...vapor).
Hmm, ok, continue...

If TC were to decarbox. his kief, he would have roughly the same THC% as if he were smoking, the only significant difference between the two is the point in the process where the acid is separated leaving only THC.
Since he's smoking/vaping, the removal of the acid using decarbox. is irrelevant because the acid is not inhibiting his lungs from absorbing the THC as does with edibles. The acid will be gone before the vapor enters his lungs, whereas without decarbox in edibles, the acid remains which blocks the majority of THC from being absorbed, hence a significantly lower THC%.

Edit, because I'm stoned...
Also mentioned in the article is how the THCA becomes degraded during the curing process of bud.
As most of us know, Kief is a term for trichomes that are typically gathered from cured bud that has either been dry sifted or ground.
The bits of trichomes that have fallen off the cured bud and are at the bottom of your stash box - Kief.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kief
Lastly, from conversations I've had with people who make their own edibles, they prefer to use fresh material over cured bud.

I could be way off base with my hypothesis, but something tells me I'm not. I think it's  .......
Let the friendly discussion continue... :)

It's simple man  , for that final magic process :D :D to happen, the herb has to be smoked or vaped or cooked or cured or otherwise taken through that release temp. The science is, how long and how high :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D     8)
What a long strange trip it is.
