And here I've been trying to figure out how I could get a rolling tray through customs.

I know my hotel room doesn't have tea & coffee facilities, so a small travel kettle with individual packets of both ordinary coffee and latte. I NEED my caffeine, especially if I'm smoking in/near my hotel. It's only 0.4 litres but that's enough.

Earplugs. This are also one of the best things you can take to a festival.

iPod with small battery-operated docking station speakers. Cypress Hill at 2am? OH HELL YEAH!

Plastic, plasters and headache tablets, I have thought hard and honestly that's all I need.

Most pens don't write on plastic bags, and "Sharpie" is less to type than "felt-tipped permanent marker". They're also part of US popular culture, heavily advertised, referenced in song and film, they sponsored a NASCAR series for a decade, Beckham promoted them, etc.

A bit like when your mum says she's going to hoover even though she's using a non-Hoover brand vacuum cleaner.

I don't like carrying a backback, but looks like it might be mandatory after reading these lists and seeing everything one might need...

I was thinking/hoping most everything except red-eye solution, or at least the basics (lighter/torch, papers, pipe, snacks, drinks) would be available at the coffeeshops...

A small power strip worked great last time I was there and a couple of rolls of neon duct tape were handy to have.

They are. Most coffeeshops have free papers, roach and grinders etc.

I'm always neurotic about forgetting something that I can't get where I'm going, and up to now haven't done.

This time I took out my trusty plug adapter out of my case – and I'd picked up the wrong one back home. If I want to charge my phone, or anything else, I'll have to pop over to New York to do it. With luck – and I'm not counting on it – there'll be one at the hotel in Amsterdam. The ubiquitous two-for-a-pound things are harder to come by on the continent, and overpriced when you find them, if Belgium is anything to go by; it's not worth even bothering to look in Leeuwarden, where British tourists seem non-existent. Sod's Law ensures that my phone battery appears to be dying as well, so needs frequent charging. Or would if I kept it on, but I've turned it off to save what's left for an emergency. Though it probably will refuse to turn on again, as it goes into sulks.

Newspapers also make functional rolling trays and are readily available. You can check your horoscope at the same time... Aries: today will be hazy...
