Coffeeshop job over summer?

Post by owenjacobkerr »

My name is Jacob, and i will be aged 18 this summer. I would love to work in a coffee shop over the summer, as cannabis is a big part of my life and to work with it would be pretty amazing. I think the culture and the way Amsterdam looks at weed is amazing. I'm going to Amsterdam in March/April and was wondering how hard it would be to actually get a job in a coffee shop for about 6 weeks over the summer, and help would be amazing, thanks.

Dude, I hate to be an arse but if you're not 18 until the summer you're going to have issues getting into coffeeshops in March/April, let alone getting a summer job in one.

Sorry I've not got anything helpful to your aim to add, I suspect you'd find it very difficult without knowing the right people, speaking Dutch or having very good fortune. Good luck though.

There's basically no way. Unless you are beautiful and speak multiple languages. Especially not for just 6 weeks.
Because life is too short to smoke bad bud.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but there is practically no chance unless you're a super hot girl and/or speak multiple languages including fluent dutch. :P

Try thinking about other places you might be able to go to, tried any dispensaries in California? See if they will hire you, I'm sure you will have to have some amazing CV.

At under 18, you won't get into a coffeeshop let alone work in one.
You might want to postpone your trip until after you turn 18.

Enjoy

Your not going to be served and if you do your risking the coffeeshops license. If you just want to go to get a feel of the city before summer then great. It's a great city albeit a small one.

Someone a friend of mine is good friends with is going to college in Amsterdam and is working at a coffeeshop in the centrum. He definitely doesn't speak fluent Dutch but maybe he's picked up enough to get by. He doesn't even really smoke weed. If you don't speak Dutch then that will limit you to touristy shops in the centrum.

6 weeks though mate... you've go pretty much no chance. I wish you luck though.

My advice would be to find work elsewhere in Amsterdam although how easy even that will be is questionable.

Hoi Jacob,
A stoner dream job for sure...
If I may, how about approaching it from another direction - AFTER you have turned 18, offer your services as a summer intern (non paying gig).
Unless you have additional resources $$$, you will have to find a paying gig to cover cost of living expenses. BTW, living in Mokum ain't cheap...
As for visiting in March/April, or whenever before you are 18, enjoy all that the city has to offer, but PLEASE don't be a chav/fucktard/etc... hanging around the front of C/S's trying to get people's attention, not cool. You can't even go in to talk (see above comment about hanging around). You are more likely to receive - "get out of here kid, ya bothering the customers". What are the chances of summer employment then? Word spreads quick in the Mokum...
Good luck...

Nice dream. Like most dreams it sounds unrealistic right about now. No reason is should not be impossible. Difficult maybe. Amsterdam in Summer...... Worth chasing perhaps. Here are a couple of ideas....

Why do you have to work in a coffeeshop? Lots of Summer jobs outside the small coffee shop industry. Like USBL said. You need friends. That takes time. Someone mentioning intern. Good idea. You can apply to intern during the day/week then once there look for evening/night work.

Remember your dream is a very popular one. Young people from all over the globe right now are plotting ways to get to and stay in places like Amsterdam for the Summer.

What do you have that makes your plan any better/different?

Best of luck. Let us know how it goes.

ps - welcome to the forum.

pff lol in your dreams

everybody wants to work at a coffeeshop , why would anyone hire you instead of their friend they already know .

Plus yea you're age is pretty much against you.
Plus you'll need to sort out a license to work here for l 6 weeks ...
you'll have more work fixing that than actually working
Relax and take notes , as I take tokes of the marihuana smoke

when your 18 and if you live in dam i would work for free at places like cannabis collage or such im sure a coffeeshop will take you but you must be free and odds on only allowed to serve coffee to start, but its the only real chance you have get experience and contacts and dealers..(do you have rich parents??) i dont know how gapie got the job rolling joints for grey area, its not great but it gets you in the door. my best mate is managing director for channel 5 most people work there free for experience and to get foot in the door. if your serious id start learning dutch straight away amongst other languages..

This...

...and dont let any of us ol'timers shit on your dreams....they may have less than 1% chance of comingto fruition, but the challenge of reaching them is usually more rememberable than actually achieving your goals.

Go for it...get high....looking back at the summer you tried to become a budtender will be a great memory.
Amsterdam dreaming.............
