Think it's schools for 11/12-16 yrs that mean a shop has to close/move

Out of interest, if a cs took all signs down blanked the windows, locked the door and became members only requiring you to join with your I.d and address ect, could they still not operate? Bit like the u.k underground co.op system?

Good question. The early part of your suggestion, the lack of advertisement, alone I don't think so. De Graal has no sign outside, the only identifying fact it is a coffeeshop is the green and white license sticker in the window (and the stench of bud I guess....).
But operating a closed doors, members only policy, perhaps that would be enough. Logically I think it would be, but I don't think lawmakers would see it that way. I wonder if coffeeshops could live off just local trade ? obviously some would be able to (and many in the more suburban areas do) but surely not the current numbers of CS? Not sure shops in centrum could afford to =(

I'd say that with the legalisation in America, pretty soon a good few central coffeeshops will be struggling anyway, if they aren't already. Progress huh! The city will still be full of tourists and the herbage will still be there for the smoking but the days of streets with multiple shops is maybe in the past.
Good, bad or whatever, I'm just an old guy that struggled to be comfortable with the razzmatazz in your face scene of the boom years anyway.

Lately I've been pondering the closure and the ripple effect it will have, assuming all listed shops are in fact closed down.
I lack the institutional knowledge to know exactly what the owners can and can't do (legally), so I'm just spit balling questions and ideas (hope)...
With 74 days remaining in 2013, I've wondered what has been the general consensus of shop owners/staff/loyal customer base on the following...
...wait and see attitude, meaning probably won't be enforced or court ordered delay (counter-suit, etc...)?
...owners have listed the property for sale, available 1 Jan 2013? Somewhat sarcastic however given the situation, best to cut and run.
...potential for relocation? Given the various restrictions, perhaps merge and expand with an existing shop, if possible?
(A stoner fantasy of mine was to buy the Coffee Shop Boat "Mississippi" in Maastricht; move it to Amsterdam; merge with Utopia; and rename it "Utopia on the Mississippi").
Ahh, the wonders of Cannabis... keeping stoners like myself in a state of delusional bliss for generations...
In the eventuality that these and other shops are ordered closed by 31 December 2013, I'll definitely be doing a shop crawl or two prior.
If for any other reason, to show my love, respect, gratitude, and support to those who've done the same for many years.
Happy Oily Stoner Kodak Moments to come...
...

Didn`t want to hijack the De Graal thread: spoke to the staff last saturday. I got told they first knew about it when they recieved a letter like seven years ago from the goverment telling them about their plans. Imagine, whether the mayor/city goverment, police of Amsterdam and schools want it. Only 'some people from the goverment in The Hague'. Hilarious .
However, they now wait what happens next but don`t see it in force ever. Latter one I`m a bit sceptical about as I spoke about the Wietpas with coffeeshop managers/owners outside of Amsterdam and they mostly never saw it coming before it kicked in.

I had a similar thought about this as a solution until I realized that there is no bargaining with or compromising with the people who are against the coffee shops. 'Won't someone please think of the children' is merely a rallying cry for such types to gather support in their eventual goal of re criminalizing cannabis, making the police powers limitless and of course making attending church compulsory.
Cannabis gets in the way of such an agenda by allowing people to question the status quo, the madness of widespread alcohol and tobacco addiction, the corruption of power all the way up the ladder and finally of course the utter stupidity of devoting large scale resources to something which is no more than superstition.
Surely better we all get drunk, fight each other, believe only what we are told and then die young so that the next wave of meat can carry on blindly in the same vein.

Why is this tragic? As I pointed out some posts above, there will still be c. 180 CSs remaining in Amsterdam.
