Why is this tragic? As I pointed out some posts above, there will still be c. 180 CSs remaining in Amsterdam.
Even 1 coffeeshop closing is a tragedy, it matters not that there will still be approx 180 coffeeshops remaining, its all about the powers that be trying to make the coffeeshops of the Netherlands extinct, I think that the CDA have admitted that they would like to close all coffeeshops, this could be only the start my friend, fuck I hop[e I'm wrong.

just the latest chapter in the story of the slow death of the Amsterdam coffeeshop scene. Maybe its just me but the vibe in Amsterdam, whilst is still special is not what it was say ten years ago. The sense of total freedom has changed. It once felt that you could do whatever you wanted as long as it didn't piss anyone off or cause a major nuisance.
As soon as they banned joint (no pun intended) licences' for alcohol and weed you could see where it was heading , the mushroom ban kind of confirmed it. The current policy seems to be to close as much of the redlight area as possible (im not interested in visiting the girls- but I mention it as it shows how dutch tolerance attitudes have changed) and to slowly reduce the number of coffee shops by not allowing new licenses and phasing out as many existing ones as they can.
I doubt that any time in the foreseeable future will bring the end (too much money involved), rather a slow lingering death. im sure there will be plenty more smoking ban/weitpass panics along the way.

I had a similar thought about this as a solution until I realized that there is no bargaining with or compromising with the people who are against the coffee shops. 'Won't someone please think of the children' is merely a rallying cry for such types to gather support in their eventual goal of re criminalizing cannabis, making the police powers limitless and of course making attending church compulsory.
Cannabis gets in the way of such an agenda by allowing people to question the status quo, the madness of widespread alcohol and tobacco addiction, the corruption of power all the way up the ladder and finally of course the utter stupidity of devoting large scale resources to something which is no more than superstition.
Surely better we all get drunk, fight each other, believe only what we are told and then die young so that the next wave of meat can carry on blindly in the same vein.
Oh dear oh dear TT ! Heres a little tune to cheer you up
Seriously, this is the band at their sparkling best .
Thanks mate, that really helped. Good for the soul.

That'll be the junior coalition partner CDA who, having lost seats in last year's election, are even more junior? Those of us in the UK or US might have forgotten what consensus politics actually means.
Let's not forget Mayor v.d. Laan's comments about the twenty years it took to clear the street dealers from the Zeedijk and his consequent attitude to wietpass. The 1012 project is a different thing altogether; where the density of CSs, Head shops and touristy bars is frankly bonkers such as Warmoestraat (not much else other than Burger Bar and that incongruous launderette) should something give? Is Amsterdam a functioning city for all or just a stoner playground?
In London, out of a population of 8,500,000, 400,000 make a living from tourism; I'd guess Ams isn't proportionately that different. For all the self-important comments here, has anyone looked at the Amsterdam Visitor Report?
16% of visitors to Ams come for the weed - even if some respondents were coy and distorted the figure, it's not as critical to the city as some seem to believe.

lol yeah Warmoestraat was fucking deadly with its concentration on coffeeshops. I will soon be on my yearly pilgrimage to Amsterdam so i will soon see what the 1012 project has done to the Warmoestraat.

You will find it almost exactly the same. The 1012 deal is to not renew CS licenses in certain areas as they 'naturally' expire. That will take some years. I'll admit to missing sitting in Burger Bar watching the youthful stoners hidden by caps and shades shuffling by in groups so tight, you wonder if they're tied together.
That thread title still appears dim-witted. "wich"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
For those with more modern approaches to 'langwidge', I'm nearly finished with my translation of Dante's Inferno into emoticons. Any proof-reading volunteers?

The RLD closures are mostly related to the increasing numbers of women trafficked from Eastern Europe. Can't think of one reason why that should be tolerated.

Thanks to both of you for your encouraging words. Yes the pages will be much shorter in keeping with modern attention...er...like..spans.
I did initially start a translation into Gen Y lingo but that was looking to be much much longer than the original dues to all the 'likes' and 'you knows' inserted every three words.
It's hard work but worth it to bring the Nine Circles of Hell to a new generation.
Anyhow a brief excerpt for your perusal and edification: Canto X

Hate to try to bring this back on-topic but then I'm just jealous because my emoticon skills are pretty negligible (must try harder).
It just occurred to me, having just heard about this 250m rule coming in, that the protest idea might best be directed at the actual schools, particularly if, as some are saying here, it's not about younger kids' schools but rather older kids. It's getting a little close to the line but what about the idea of getting some of these older kids involved in speaking out against how utterly dumb this is. Not only that but what if they're also commenting on wider cannabis issues to the extent that it appears this 250m rule is becoming an aid to a platform drawing the attention of youth?

High school kids (12-18) are more likely to get in contact with the shops and the wares than elementary school kids (6-12)
Their issue is with teenage kids smoking, in their lunch breaks etc

Quite a few are closing in the RLD. I have never seen a list but there is this list of streets and how many coffeeshops will have to close on them.
