I have had bad paranoia/anxiety once or twice in the Dam. Both times it was a combination of being solo, not knowing the Dam very well and sativas. It has been said before but you really need to be comfortable with your surroundings and feel safe. If you feel like that, go and buy an Indica/Hybrid, fly back to the hotel, put the TV on and get high.

I found it is all in the mind and by knowing your surroundings better and feeling comfortable the anxiety will go away.

I liked your post. It filled me full of questions....

Are you aware there are different types of weed known as strains? YES Are you aware there is a difference between high and stoned? YES Do you know some types of weed will get you high where as others will get you stoned. YES Did you know that being high is a very different experience from being stoned? YES
Do you like to experience different mental states and experiment with new thoughts? Not so much at my age Are you prepared to take the risk of feeling a certain way to attain this goal? No - for the same reasons I don't do Acid or DMT these days Are you ready to take the proper steps to load the game in your favor and give yourself a chance to reach higher consciousness? How would you know with certainty in advance? Higher consciousness? Do you justify whiskey or crack in the same pseudo-spiritual way? Do you even believe this is possible with or without cannabis? I ain't a shamen - I like not being sober in various ways. I find it fun.

Should you try and think a little more deeply about this and other subjects before coming to a judgement?

Unsure how I have provided a judgment here. I express my own opinions and am old and ugly enough to know that people will do what people do irrespective of my views. To say that paranoia is an intrinsic part of smoking is akin to accepting that violence is an intrinstic part of boozing. Mind you, talking shite seems to be irredeemably linked to coke use... Did I say it's all just my opinion?

Should you try and be less patronising of views differing to your own?

Only questions for you my friend. Good luck with the answers. There is gold in those hills, should you care to dig.
I'll do what I do, thanks. (As will everyone else here.)

(I'm starting the get the impression there's a distinct orthodoxy on this site which I clearly haven't understood...)

So paranoia's all in the mind? You learn something everyday, Sigmund.

I don't think that's a fair comparison, Gronin. Violence is an action, paranoia is a feeling. I think a more appropriate comparison would be alcohol and nausea. Much like nausea with alcohol, Paranoia can be a side effect of cannabis usage for some people. For most people, this is most often a consequence of overindulgence, most often with sativas. If I were to speculate, I'd say that the "racy" effects associated with those strains can magnify the feelings of paranoia.

Plain and simple, if someone feels that cannabis isn't for them - they shouldn't use it. Some people are more sensitive to particular drugs, or particular effects of those drugs than others (leaving aside the 4% of people who have physical allergies). So basically, I'm agreeing with what you said, "some people's mental predisposition is not suited to weed".

As to orthodoxy, this forum seems less prone to it than others, IMO. But, given the forum subject, and the association of paranoia with overindulgence, the natural response to thread like this is to post the typical advice to light smokers new to Amsterdam, namely:

1) Ask the budtender
2) Steer clear of the high end of the menus, particularly sativa strains
3) Take it slow
4) Keep a sweet drink nearby in case of a whitey

All except number four have already been mentioned in this thread, so I figured I might as well throw it in.

Well I dont know but maybe all that paranoia is coming from the fact that everywhere else its forbidden to smoke/grow/sell/buy weed and it takes some time to switch the mind that its ok to smoke openly in public.
That feeling deep in your head that ur doin something wrong fear of that someone finds out and ur goin to jail and all that shit
And this takes time because of this deep shit in your head.

Hm been wondering if locals in amsterdam have any paranoias at all I mean ppl who lived there from birth no expats etc.

This is solid advice, but only if you have the discipline to not smoke before you get back, otherwise, you'll end up getting lost and paranoid anyway. Happened once in July 2011 when I walked from the RokerIJ on Kinkerstreet (in the Jordaan) after picking up a joint there, then trying to get back to the hotel near the Van Gogh Museum in the late afternoon/early evening. I walked along the Prinsengracht with the idea that I would make the right turn when I got near the Leidseplein or the Rijksmuseum. But first I decided to sit down on the edge of the canal and smoke half the doobie. It was a gorgeous summer day, probably 25C (78F). Well, after getting up and continuing the jaunt, I overshot both by about a kilometer and ended up in the eastern part of town, not far from the Tropenmuseum. Don't know how the hell that happened. I guess I was too focused on the beauty of the streets and too stoned. It wasn't too bad of a journey, as I eventually made it back, but I can see how under adverse circumstances (bad weather, strong sativa, hunger attack with my euros back at the hotel, psychosis), that might have been a really bad trip.

I also had lots of paranoia/anxiety cases when I used to smoke weed a lot.One of the reason is probably due the fact that it is illegal.Shameful to admit, but I always need some beer, wich seem to help me with my "weed anxiety"..hard to image smoking weed without beer..
Nowadays, because of my work, I smoke just a couple of times a year, but recently I have grow more interest towards weed again, after seeing how the legislation progress in some countries are starting to slowly showing a bit better..
As mentioned in my first post,I am planning to go on september to amterdam for the first time with some good friends of mine, and I am also searching information what strains would suit best for me.This topic has gave some good information, and I probably will try to start with some mellow indica and maybe in the evening some sativa and hash..

Cheers for getting this back on track :-)

For those of you who don't understand how it is possible to be "anxious" in a permissive environment, it's not about the environment. It's completely about what happens when certain psychoactive chemicals are ingested.

Thankfully, it doesn't affect most people. And I do agree some people should not use cannabis at all, much like some should not drink alcohol. Beer and a joint, if you can handle it, well, that's about as good as it gets for me. Ask all those smokers in 't Nes sipping and smoking ;-)

As I said, It doesn't really affect me any more, unless I overdo it on sativas (like, the third week in April most years :-)

Just kidding :!: or am I  don't be paranoid.

Nice work with the red text post dissection. Bit of a give away though.

A give away as what exactly? You can't leave a comment like that unqualified.

In two pages about cannabis and paranoia, not one person even hinted at maybe.. just maybe..not smoking it? Seemed a glaring omission to me. So stating the bleedin' obvious is trolling? Saying that cannabis isn't good for all people all the time is trolling? That's the orthodoxy...

In the previous post in this thread, I stated "some people should not use cannabis at all".

Er... in the post you made directly above mine where I first raised the oh-so-controversial abstentionist view, you recommend indicas for those anxious souls and go on to describe finding the 'right' strain as a "worthy goal". You quote above comes somewhat later. There is a chronology here...

Apologies to those young 'uns who might struggle with my use of words in lieu of moronic emoticons. It's an age thing.

I've always defended cannabis against those who believe it has a deleterious effect. But if they came here, they might well believe it DOES make you stupid.

This place is for kids or those who refuse to grow up. So bye Peter Pans - keep photographing bud as it very very worthwhile. Toodle-pip and ga naar je moer!

Back to the topic at hand. I get paranoid/anxious sometimes when I get high. I just recently found there was Indica and Sativa and that one gets you stoned and one gets you high. Not that it would of mattered most of my life as I just bought what the dealer had. I'm not even sure he knew. I do remember through life sometimes being stoned and sometimes being high. After learning what I learned, this all makes sense now.

I am going to Amsterdam this summer and I plan on getting stoned and maybe high a little. I haven't smoked much in the last 26 years my because job prevents me from smoking very often. Needless to say, a little goes a long way for me. I always thought I was lucky to be able to get stoned/high cheaper that everyone else. Take a puff or two and put it down for an hour or two. Repeat as necessary. If I get freaked out I don't know what I will do. I guess I will cross that bridge if I get there.
