420 questions from a brit

Post by dallydw »

Thinking about booking for a solo trip but went alone at christmas and had the worst time ever. The place just seemed to be full of belgians/germans or summat and all non English speaking. Maybe ignorance on my part for assuming the whole world speaks english and not learning any new languages but anyway. Just wondering how the place fairs up around 420, am I welcome as a brit? Is there more/less nationalities or no difference? Is it an american or canadian thing and how many americans/canadians actually go for the 420 or do more stay at home to celebrate? Did I just get unlucky at xmas, has been about 6/7yrs since was last there, maybe I wasn't looking in the right places (most of the coffeeshops all just seemed dead, no atmosphere and barely anyone in them, decor leaves a lot to be desired too).
Either way it would be nice to be not put off by 1 bad experience but id hate to have the dam well and truly knocked out of me by another bad trip.
Hoping for some good feedback as most trip reports I've read dont go into an awful lot of detail about events /activities more weeds reviews.
Thanks
Ross

You went to Amsterdam solo during the slow season. Most English speaking expats don't hang out in coffeeshops. I would suggest you stop by 't Nes Cafe next time, plenty of English speakers there. As for 4/20, have you read through the thread? https://www.coffeeshopdirect.com/forum/viewt ... 11&t=22559

I never had any problems like that. Christmas isn't the best time for a solo trip. Last time I was in town during Christmas, Amsterdam had a bit of a dead vibe to it. 420 is definitely the better time to go if you want to meet some fellow smokers. Still I wonder why people wouldn't understand you. Where exactly did you stay?

p.s. fuck you Gapie I'm German

Wow didnt expect such a quick reponse. I stayed in belle vue hotel right opposite centraal station. Cheap and cheerful but vvvvvvv.quiet. Was there 23-27december so expected things to have wound down but as I say everyone I spoke to had very little or no english and just wouldn't engage me. I dress well and only weigh like 10.5 stone so I cant say I think I look intimidating, there again the brits get a bad rep everywhere, can't say I enjoy being around your typical brit tourist though, hence Amsterdam instead of spain or somewhere.
Think I'm going to book anyway, most of the better known shops (grey area voyagers t'ness) were closed for xmas so dying to check them out, sod it, its booked!

Completely missed this post with big red letters in the title right at the top of the 'travel plans' forum must have been more baked than I thought earlier! Thank you

Always makes me smile trying to talk to new people in Amsterdam. Sometimes it is a total disaster other times very very rewarding.

Really a mixed bag. That is why meeting folks off this forum works so well. We all have quite a bit in common already so it brings us together in Amsterdam and that usually means a good time is had and in a way you kinda know who you are meeting already from their posts on here.

From your point of view I'd have a read of the forum a bit and see what I thought then go and meet up folks at T&T's. There will be lots going on around this time. You are most welcome.
How much did you produce?

Don't worry about it. I went solo at the start of this month and after a T&T with Gapie soon after landing (he thinks I am Soapy, so he gets the blame) went to Paradox and had a nice smoke with two pensioner locals. Met a couple of Norwegian lads in Anyday and after that smoke I was battered for a while.

Always someone to meet. If you are sat at a table with a group nearby, pass on the J. Soon get talking. BTW, I ain't the typical Brit tourist either, being (cough) middle aged and quite introvert at first.

Enjoy.

+1

In two trips (11 days total), I've met numerous English-speaking Germans, friendly as can be, too. Come to think of it, though, I've yet to meet someone from the UK in a coffeeshop.
Next trip: November 2013

come looking for me at nes mate.. will introduce you to a few people and get you High if you like..
being in dam solo is a great thing all you need to do is pass a joint or just sit on a table with complete strangers, you get better the more times you do it, id say 60ish% of solo people i meet are Canadians (i seem to really get on with them).. also if they are in a good mood always have a chat and share a pure joint with the bud dealer.. if your out during 420 alot of us are going solo too
