Throat Hurts from Pipe

Post by literary_scholar »

Hi Guys -- I used to be a pretty heavy smoker. I smoked about 10 cigarettes per day, and about 3 - 4 joints per day. Just recently, I decided to quit smoking tobacco, so I got rid of all my tobacco, rolling papers, etc. and I bought myself a glass pipe for smoking cannabis. The problem is that my throat really hurts and I cough a lot from smoking the pipe (I never coughed from smoking joints or cigarettes).

What can I do? I can't go back to smoking joints because I dont' do tobacco anymore, and I don't want to roll pure joints because that would be too much weed for me! Will my throat just get used to this after a couple of weeks or what? Any regular pipe smokers out there? Care to share your experiences?

I smoke bowls exclusively. Short ones, too. For years. No problems here.

Except when I visit Ahmstahdahm. Then I roll a lot more.

Pipes are tried and true, since the beginning of time.

It must be you. Good luck with your Quest.

Perhaps you bought some glass holding an evil spirit. Bad juju...

I find the biggest cause of coughing for me whether it be by bong, joint or pipe is heat. Just go for long steady slow pulls and the temperature is vastly reduced. Longer tubing on pipes also help to cool and if you have a bong with ice notches you are laughing.

Oh yes and with pipes the bowl size affects temperature. I have a Roor shotgun pipe in the small size and that thing is capable of burning at such an intense heat as you can draw so much air so easily. Spoon pipes seem to be the most compact and cool smoking for me.

Like everyone else says. It's the heat. Check out the amazed pipe. It pulls very nice and smoke is way cooler than average bowl of any size. https://www.coffeeshopdirect.com/forum/viewt ... =7&t=21148

a bong is definitely the answer for smooth effective hits! preferably with a built in percolator of some kind to further cool the smoke! also if needed pre-coolers / ash catchers can be added to provide extra cooling of the smoke! plus they look really cool! lol a diffuser down stems is always a good idea too! for full flavour always use hemp wick like bee-line to light your bowl! butane sucks ass! at first it all sounds a lot of hassle but trust me its worth it for the smoking enjoyment! be warned buying glass can cause a serious addiction!

Hi,
Did you receive the answers you were looking for?
To add to the wisdom provided already...
The primary cause, as mentioned by others, is probably the temperature of the smoke.
Next, what material is the pipe made out of, or do you experience throat discomfort with all pipes in general?
So then, let's talk about possible solutions, k? 8)
1. Quit smoking all together.
2. Stop using pipes.
3. Purchase a water/ice/percolator pipe (not a bong, or I would have said bong  ).
3a. When using a water pipe, ensure the liquid is as cold as possible, and draw slowly, allowing the smoke to cool properly. (already mentioned by great stoner minds)

Let us know how you get along... if not, then keep on tokin. ;)

You won't go wrong, if you choose a bong!!! 8)

It's what I use, for that very reason.

Try a vaporizer. You barely feel anything in your lungs or throat and the taste is so much better than any other method of ingestion or inhalation. It's worth recommending for the taste alone! In addition to the famous Volcano and Verdamper, which one can test drive at many Amsterdam coffeeshops, there are many small, portable ones now. The Magic Flight Launch Box is great.

If Vapes are too expensive for you then you might want to get a "bubbler pipe." They can be almost as small as a regular pipe and they draw the smoke down into a small water chamber to cool the smoke. Kind of like a mini-portable bong - well, at least the principle of cooling the smoke is the same.

Regardless of what you choose, you might have acquired a throat/lung sensitivity from any prior tobacco use. I have relatives who stopped smoking 10-15 years ago and they STILL have smokers cough. Good luck and hope your future tokes are smooth and delicious!
