Need some info for a side trip my friends and I will be making during our stay in April 07. We are planning to take a tour of the Grolsch brewery in Enschede on monday the 23rd and would like to go into Germany since we will be that close to the border. We just don't know of anything in that area and were wondering if any of you good folks could tell us of some interesting places to go that are not too far for a day trip? Any suggestions would be helpful.

If you're interested in a small town in the hills, with a pleasent little half timbered motif ,Tecklenberg isn't far...or if big old churches are of interest Munster has three cathedrals ,is much larger, and has a worthy Altstadt. ...in either case you get to drive on the Autobahn . Both within a half hour or so from Enschede .

Thanks for the reply Epsilon. Driving the autobahn would be a great reason for going to Germany, unfortunately we are going by train. I don't think renting a car for the trip would be a good idea either as we are probably going to be too stoned and drunk from the stop in Enschede to drive safely. Any other ideas would be appreciated.

oops ...figured you be in car for some reason...Not sure about T'berg having Bahnhof, but Munster assuredly does , close in to centrum. (Got off a train there once and saw Jimi Hendrix -but most recently in 02)...well then, you may just want to consider a seperate daytrip to Koln where the Station is right next to the Kolner Dom, dead Centrum. Have never made that as a daytrip from AMS but it seems several folks from ACD / Channels have , and there are some threads on the subject...

Yeah Koln is really pretty nice. I took the train from Amsterdam to Koln on the way to Frankfurt earlier this summer. The train got me there around noon I think, and I had ample time to wander around that day and still get a good night's sleep before continuing my journey the next day. I think it would be a fine trip if you're interested in getting into Germany. Koln's Dom Cathedral alone is worth the trip (right outside the train station)

Thanks VP. It looks like Koln is a day trip all its own. We were hoping to cross the border after the brewery tour in Enschede, but that will not leave much time that day. I have heard in the past that most (if not all) german towns and cities have there own local breweries. Do you know if Koln has any that do tours in english? That may be what will convince my travelling buds to go there. I know they are not interested in just seeing the architecture, and since Germany doesn't have coffeeshops, their interests are limited. If you know of any festivals or fairs going on at that time that could be another deciding factor. Thanks again.
