Re: whats your fav portable vape
The Ascent is pretty awesome. Personally I won't be buying one though, as my portable vape needs are already covered. I'm doing a usage video of the Ascent soon, will post it up here...
Having used both the Ascent and the Solo extensively, I'll give you my opinion. Both have their strengths and weaknesses, and personally I'd have a difficult choice as a buyer selecting between the two! Both are good in their own ways, and each suits different situations better. They are pretty much the same size and weight. The Ascent does have better airflow than the Solo, meaning its slightly easier to get big clouds off the Ascent (the Solo can deliver clouds, but it takes longer and requires patience, as in the MFLB)
If I had to choose between Ascent and Solo...
For home use, I'd get the Solo (only with the aftermarket stems for improved airflow, and the power adapter) For using out and about, in public places, the Ascent is the clear winner by far (no offense to certain fans of the Solo who frequent this thread, not pointing any fingers!)
I hope you'll value my honest, unbiased opinions, as opposed to getting "Solo defensive" and trying to pick holes in my review. Cheers, and please continue to enjoy whatever vaporizers you choose!
Solo pro's:
- Way more aftermarket accessories available worldwide, like GonG adapters, improved mouthpieces, battery upgrades etc.
- The main unit (excluding the glass mouthpiece) is much more durable than the Ascent. The Solo can easily survive a small drop that would destroy the inner glass pieces of the Ascent)
- Can sit upright on the table
- ±20 euros cheaper than the Ascent
Solo con's:
- Battery life is relatively short
- Requires you to carry around (and protect) the glass stem seperately
- Less stealthy to use in public, looks quite unusual esp. with stem attached, draws more curious eyes
- Requires an extra power adapter (not included) to vaporize while plugged in
- Bowl size is quite small, I find myself reloading very often
- Temp control is analog, no way to dial in specific temperature
- Less pocket-friendly than the Ascent
- Restricted draw (my personal peeve, this don't bother all users)
Ascent pro's:
- Much longer battery life than the Solo.
- Mouthpiece is self contained, no need to carry extra bits around. This may sound like a small feature, but it enabled me to vaporize while riding my bike around Amsterdam. When I'm finished, just tuck the mouthpiece away and drop the whole thing into my pocket, done. This is not really possible with the Solo, as you have to deal with the separate glass stem. Also, the Solo stem is only held down by gravity, not locked to the main unit. Hit an unexpected speedbump, or tilt the Solo over more than 45 degrees, and the stem will fall out). For vaping while riding, skating, snowboarding, active stuff, the Ascent is the best choice.
- It's possible to vaporize and charge the unit simultaneously with the included charger, without needing to buy an extra power adapter like the Solo.
- Looks like a phone/shaver etc to the untrained eye
- Flat shape fits neatly into pocket
- Precise digital temperature control
- Larger bowl capacity (Important feature for me and many others. I get tired of pausing my movie/game every 10 minutes to reload my vape)
Ascent con's:
- I find the bowl construction/hinge a bit weird, feels slightly flimsy and is not the easiest to clean.
- The glass inner pieces are WAY too fragile, I shattered one of them while cleaning in ISO. Buy spares!!!
- The styling is too "glam" for my tastes, I prefer the minimal look of the Solo

Re: whats your fav portable vape
Thanks for that quality review bleak. These are the two specific vapes that I have been looking at recently. Still undecided. I've also looked at the pinnacle pro- like the idea of water pipe adapter and the fact that its really stealthy. Taste doesn't sounds as good obviously to the glass products. Not a biggie for me though.
The one thing that has specifically put me off the Arizer is the shape for out and about and the lack of air flow on the draw.
The ascent however seems to have so many technical problems still at the minute. Think i'd rather wait till they sorted it out..
Have you used pinnacle by any chance, looks like it offers massive clouds and can be used whilst on charge. Another great feature.

Re: whats your fav portable vape
airflow isnt an issue with the solo.... its a pain for a few days then loosens up. and you can also get a better stem with more air.
wouldnt take it out and about tho.
maybe in the car...lol

Haven't tried the Pinnacle yet but I hear its pretty nice. Once they make their way to Europe, I'll try one out.Mike93 wrote:Thanks for that quality review bleak. If you need a vape for out and about, the Solo is not the best choice. I also agree about waiting on the Ascent. Its quite good, but far from perfect. Theres a ton of new vaporizers coming into the market to shake things up, better to wait and see.
With all due respect, the Solo's restricted airflow issue is widely known and acknowledged. If it wasn't an issue, why would there be a market for "high airflow" stems in the first place? The stems do loosen up after a while but it makes only a small difference and certainly doesn't turn the Solo into a cloud-maker.dconstrukt wrote:airflow isnt an issue with the solo.... its a pain for a few days then loosens up. and you can also get a better stem with more air.
Don't get me wrong, the Solo is a really amazing vaporizer, one of the best portables on the market. I recommend it all the time. But the restricted airflow is a put-off for MANY people including myself, so I always advise to try before buying if possible.

Re: whats your fav portable vape
i have 4 different vapes here…. the solo's air pull can be a LITTLE bit restricted compared to the others…. a little.
nothing big.
it is a pain the first week but then its all good.
the enhanced pipes i didn't notice a difference to be honest… not worth the money to me.
the cloud maker by far is the flashvape with the stage 2 kit.
problem is it burns the living fuck outta the weed… now each time we use it it tastes like burnt stuff.
plus its all metal so it gets hot as fuck too.
if they could fix those issues, it'd rock.

Thanks Bleak for those reviews. The acsent is the neatest looking stealth machine for herbs that I've seen. I like the Iolite wispr for out and about but it's audible when heating and that one looks sooo inconspicuous and silent ssshh!!
What a long strange trip it is.

This is the best price for the ascent I have seen so far. Payday next week so very tempted to purchase. If I do will post here to let you know how i'm getting along with it. Looked at the solo also but doing alot of cycling now so this looks for me to be the best option.
Thanks Bleak for all your answers on this thread very helpful.

Re: whats your fav portable vape
Yup, I've used the concentrate tray. I tested it with regular hash, unpressed kif, and some isolaters. Haven't tested it with the clear oil/liquid concentrates. It takes much longer to heat up, but it works. Amazing flavor from vaporizing pure hash! Very spicy/earthy.pengaldinho wrote:Nice review bleak, cheers. Been considering a Solo for a while now.....

The setup is a bit fiddly, but the trays are super cheap and enable hash vaporizing in the MFLB which is cool.
EDIT: should also add, the concentrate tray needs a fully-charged battery in good condition, or ideally the power adapter 2.0 (thats what I used). If you use a tired old battery, it won't reach the temps necessary.
Re: whats your fav portable vape
so after the long long wait for the ascent found in a haarlem headshop for £150.after trying one out i wanted it more and at the last moment (yesterday) i got the solo. should arrive in next 2 days
so if i love it im gonna want some of the extras like the charger to use whilst still charging, ive read the newer models do this as well but not good for batteries?? will want the water pipe adapter, is the high efficiency PVHEGonG one the one to get? i also love the f-Bomb Jet Diffused Micro Bubbler, is it worth buying? what accessories for your solo do you like the best???

Good choice, you can't go wrong with a Solostuart1976 wrote:so after the long long wait for the ascent found in a haarlem headshop for £150.after trying one out i wanted it more and at the last moment (yesterday) i got the solo. should arrive in next 2 days![]()

Its true, Arizer have recently improved the latest model Solo so it doesn't need that extra $35 charger to vape while plugged in. Apparently they modified the circuitry to allow a higher current input. There is a debate about whether the higher currency is bad for the battery health, but I don't know for sure. If you're mostly using the Solo at home, you're good. I think the Solo is better as a home vaporizer than a true portable anyway, so this change is a step in the right direction.
Stuart1976, fingers crossed that you're given the latest model that doesn't need the extra charger. It could take a while until the older stock is cleared, as this update is still quite new.
For accessories: The PVHEGonG is excellent, but you don't have to order all the way from Planet Vape in Canada. Verdampftnochmal in Germany also makes them. They are cheaper than the Planet Vape ones, plus they have a carb hole which is awesome.

I also recommend getting the improved stem while you're at it:

I use both of the above Verdampftnochmal products with my Herbalaire and they are excellent quality, German glass!
Re: whats your fav portable vape
