Maastricht coffee shops raided, three arrested

Three people were arrested on Monday night during a police raid on at least one of Maastricht's cannabis cafes.

The raid followed a warning last Thursday by the city's mayor Onno Hoes that legal action would be taken if the cafes went ahead with plans to sell marijuana to non-residents on Sunday.

The local cannabis cafe association told Nos that several of its members were raided on Monday night, but police deny this.

The three arrested were two managers and a staff member. All the soft drugs on the premises were confiscated.

By law the cafes, known as coffee shops, are only allowed to sell marijuana to people who officially live in the Netherlands. But the local association decided to sell to non-residents on Sunday to mark the Liberation Day celebrations.

The law banning foreigners is being called into question by mayors in several large cities, who say they will use their discretion about imposing the ban.

Maastricht coffee shop faces three-month closure

The three people arrested in Maastricht on Monday for selling cannabis to non-residents have been released, but the coffee shop where they work is threatened with three months closure.

The Mississippi faces the temporary closure because it sold soft drugs to foreigners, Maastricht council said on Tuesday afternoon.

The police raided the coffee shop on Monday night, following a warning last Thursday by the city's mayor Onno Hoes that legal action would be taken if cafes went ahead with plans to sell marijuana to non-residents on Sunday to mark Liberation Day.

By law the cafes are only allowed to sell marijuana to people who officially live in the Netherlands.

A recent court ruling in favour of one coffee shop closed by Hoes has given rise to hopes the ban on foreigners may be dropped.

Coffee shops in the southern cities of Maastricht, Roermond and Sittard are now selling cannabis to foreigners again following the ruling.

Mayors in several large northern cities, including Amsterdam, say they will use their discretion about imposing the ban.

only 1 coffeeshop was raided... so the other shops are open and
sell to tourists. The Shop was raided is open again, too.

The Pvda partie said that since the shops are open to everybody
everything is fine... from the moment the shops were open to everybody
the drugrunners were not there anymore... the businesses were happy with that
... so they said it was the best sunday for the people from Maastricht since the
shops were closed for tourists and they don´t want that the shop have to close
for 3 months

Another funny information from the press is that when the shop was raided yesterday...
a group of drugrunners celebrate that... they went to the shops in the near and sreamed
things like so we are the winner!!! We have the best weed and so on.... and all that saved by the press

There was nearly no hash available in the shops... so my idea is that the maroccan guys
are not happy about the new policy of the shops to sell again to tourists...

I really can't understand why that asshole mayor is doing this? He does not have popular support for this policy. Without exception everyone is much more disturbed by the street pushers than any coffeeshop.

Wait, what? The court, the public, and most the politicians are against the weed pass? So what is stopping them from overturning or ignoring the law as other parts of The Netherlands have done? Failed point of argument...next.

Balou, not because people were only spending their money on drugs, so wrong that it's laughable. It's because 18-20 somethings from neighboring countries (including the UK) don't know how to act/behave... this is the main reason. These little stonertards dump their bullshit at the feet of the Dutch, then run home and plead ignorance while laughing. I would be against coffee shops if my town was used and abused... not worth the few trickle down Euros.

As a part time Maastrichter, I must disagree with some of what's been said. Yes Limburg is a conservative place, and Maastricht is full of older, stuffy types who don't want all the canna-tourists around. However, the alternative situation created by that dumbass mayor is much worse. The tourists still come in droves, and still cause the minor disturbances they always have. However, they are now dealing with street pushers who sell EVERYTHING! When the tourists aren't queuing up (drive-through style) these pushers roam the streets and bridges and push their stuff on everybody (at times aggressively).

So while many (most?) Maastrichters don't want the canna-tourists, this is not a solution at all. The tourists still come, and you've added criminals in the mix. The idea may have had support at first, but its entirely gone now.

hmm that´s stupid... generally all id cards will be scanned in a computer
in all Coffeeshops in Maastricht. But when I was in Coffeeshop Smoky
this monday they only checked my id... so if that is really true it´s stupid...
