Thats my question i dont now if i can smoke weed when i walk to dam streets so many people say yes is normal in holland and another says only in coffee shop or houses can you help me because is more interesting when you can smoke visiting places

I've smoked all over town and the only I wasn't discreet on purpose was at the 4:20 smoke out at the town hall.

Never had a problem but have had some black looks from those who look to notice and disapprove.

Its generally considered a bit rude to smoke in public places, especially busy shopping streets or anywhere near children. Even if you're in the RLD if you walk past a policeman with a lit joint you will definitely get some grief.

Personally I think there is considerable merit in the argument that there is no point talking the piss in the one place you are provided with legitimate venues to buy and smoke, and indeed that tourists etc walking around smoking everywhere does somewhat incline sections of the Dutch population against coffeeshops & tourists accessing them.

Having said that I quite often have a sneaky smoke when in town while walking down a quiet canal or sat in a park, just I try to make sure I'm not bothering anyone else if I do.

It is always good to remember you are a guest in someone else's country. Respect the locals and be discreet. There are many parks, small and large, where you can sit and chill for a while and be quite anonymous.

It's not quite true that a copper will hassle you if you are smoking in the RLD at night. I would certainly say be careful and cup your joint, don't be an idiot or a total wastehead and you should be fine unless you bump into the wrong copper. On Sunday night while it was very busy I stood and filled a spoon pipe and smoked it using my turbo lighter. As I was just hitting it a police bike came along, I kept pulling on the pipe as he rode past. I thought I was going to get in trouble but I kept calm and carried on. I am not suggesting anyone try this, but it is possible. I think most tourists must think I am hitting a crack pipe with some of their looks but the copper rode slowly past like they do.

Never once have i had a problem with smoking in public...but there was that one time with gapie and him through the Sinter Klass parade....

As I understand Dutch law, it is illegal to smoke marijuana in public.

Walking around town, especially in the RLD, it is apparent that many people do not obey this law.

As many posters have already said, common sense is the best course. Discretion and an awareness and concern of the people around you will enable you to smoke in public.

Yep, i frequently smoke "in public" but usually only along less crowded canals. The joints I roll for that purpose don't have the obvious huge cone shape but look more like cigarettes.

I try to be totally stealthy about it as I do NOT want to piss off locals who disapprove. I don't want to be feeding the enemy.

So, yes, smoke outside if you want, but keep it low key, out of large crowds and not anywhere near kids.

One of those portable vaporizers like the IOLite would probably THE tool for that purpose, since it even keeps the smell down.

as mentioned, it's considered rude by the locals. It does give drug tourists a bad reputation.
