Lost in Leeuwarden - 11/12 with pics
Re: Lost in Leeuwarden - 11/12 with pics
Always good to read about Leeuwarden. I went there once and found it to be exactly as you describe - strangely quiet and other worldly. I posted a couple of pics, including a skateboarding Friesian cow, here: https://www.coffeeshopdirect.com/forum/viewt ... f=10&t=444

I've nicked that cow.
Can't remember all that much about the two days in Amsterdam, because they blend into all the other trips I made last year. I went to the Diane Arbus exhibition at FOAM, because I knew it was on and wanted to catch it; apart from that, I bought my usual mix of cheap-to-expensive black hash from Utopia, Central, de Kuil, Rusland, 't Ballonetje, de Graal and wherever I've forgotten, and probably the odd bit of greenery as well, but the only one that sticks in the mind was the crap smoke of the trip (Eerste Hulp's temple ball) because everything else was up to scratch.
Stayed in Abba, and met the elderly cat:

Took Chica's picture in the Rusland, engaged in her usual activity:

Saw a cat in a shop window on Overtoom:

Went for my leaving-A'dam beers (Of course I'm not a stoner, Mr/Ms Nice Customs Officer. Never touch the foul stuff) at Gollum, where the choice is vast, though not for this ostentatiously teetotal cat:

And came back by coach, which was searched for the first time on the UK side; usually they're content with whatever passes for checks in France. But not to much effect. At the time, I thought I'd be back for a few days in December, but that was not to be. So this was the end of my Great Amsterdam Year, where I'd been over for a few days most months, and done tons of things I'd missed out on one way or another on all those trips in the '80s, and discovered a shedload of good coffeeshops and products, thanks to this forum. This year's travel will begin late, but it's in sight now.

Pretty sure it's noon, though allow for the fact that that's in smoker's time. Checked into my hotel at noon and went there afterwards, so I was probably there a quarter past the hour, just as they were just opening up. I'm envious, having only enough time for a couple of days in Mokum on my next visit (probably when you're there). But I may be able to go back in late June or early July. Looking forward to your travelogue.

Reminds me of a town called Hillsborough over here.Smith2 wrote: It's easy to start to feel that you're in a twilight zone populated by occasional zombies, and you'll be trapped forever. And this before smoking.

Cheers smithy just booked two days in Leeuwarden during my September trip, I love exploring new places in the Netherlands but would not have given this small northern town a second look without your report. Thanks
