Apparently their bar is "one of the cheapest" in town. You should browse their forums. I want to say beers are like 2-3 euros. They serve Grolsch I think.

you do know those pictures were of the Winston & not the flying pig?
I was originally gonna stay at the pig but the Winston looks far better, so thats the place i was asking about. I only realised you may have misunderstood when you mentioned their forums, as the Winston dont actually seem to have a forum.

as I am going to stay at the flying pig uptown from nov 7 - 9 I wonder if anyone can report on that place what he liked / disliked ??

I'd recommend The Flying Pig (downtown) on Nieuwendijk - a short walk from Warmoesstraat (for the nightlife) and the prices are usually between €20 - €30 per person....I've stayed in nicer, cleaner places that have cost a lot more but I keep going back because of the convienience of the bar and chillin' rooms as well as the value for money....

I'll second that. I've stayed at both of the Flying Pigs in the last 6 months, and I'll be returning. Why? because of the 5 star service and jacuzzi's? no dumbass. its cheap, and you get what you pay for. 30E approx for a single bed in a room with 3 other people. pay less and share with more. cheap enough drinks, bring your own from albert heijn if your bothered.

smoke anywhere but the rooms, due to the fire hazards. soo, i get back to the hostel at 2am. smoke a few more whilst having a nice whisky, and crash for a while. Tbh I usually miss breakfast, but I've been and its croissants, bread jam cheese etc. Continental. Coffee and tea provided.

its not the hilton, but for a traveller on a budget its great. And you meet some amazing people there, and loads of dumb easy american chicks. obviously a standard london accent helps with these girls because hey "he's bridtish" as they say lol. way cheaper than the rld, and tighter too;) x

just saw this thread, stayed at the flying pig downtown as well, great review, says it all really. had the pleasure of random girls in the room i shared, worked out nice . as i recall though only registered guests are allowed in the place.

Been reading on the Flying Pig forums that it seems that non of there hotels\hostels allow the smoking of cannabis inside the building any longer!.

This does not seem to clear but the thread I just looked at suggests that if you want to smoke a joint you now have to goto the out-door patio areas where the 1 near cantraal station closes there patio at 9pm and the other 1 futher south has there patio open untill 3am.

If anyone is staying at or thinking of staying at any of the Flying Pig places you really should get clarification on the issue off them directly but it does seem certain they dont allow cannabis smoking inside the building any longer!.

Smoking is allowed on patios. Uptown (by Vodelpark) closes its patio at 9pm. Downtown closes its patio at 3am.

As I understand the Pig management are looking into how they can provide smoking rooms in both hostels.

To be fair to them, they don't want to get hit with the 2400 euro fine and its the law of the land. Too easy for some muppet to get them nicked by smoking a j with tobacco in it without them knowing about it.

Nothing says you can't eat space cake and relax anywhere you want.

I will be staying at the Flying Pig Downtown for a week from Oct. 17 - 24.

I'll be there next week, will put an update in here for you about what i thought of it.

I stayed at the one Uptown back in May. I had a blast. Loads of people in the bar downstairs. Met alot of cool folks. Good idea for budget minded people.

I stayed at the downtown back in June, absolutely loved it especially the cushioned stage area which only has 2 rules:

1) No Shoes
2) No Sleeping (everyone there including me was stretching this rule as much as we could )

I dont know what its like now with the smoking ban in place, hopefully Kaiser will fill us in on what its like when he gets back

for two person and smoker friendly room what is better flying pig or winston? and do they have a tv? a fridge? breakfast?

and what would the rates be and are there any pics

The flying pig is not smoker friendly anymore. You used to be able to smoke in the bar but never in the rooms. They only allow smoking outside on there terraces now. Cant comment on the winston though.
