Total WOW on the pictures! What were you shooting with?

You covered several areas and I enjoyed working my recognition database! There were some things missing from my database. The canal picture from Day 2, where is that?

You are planning another trip in the short-term, I hope.

The people need more pictures!

Would you visit Yo-Yo's again?

...I've never been there myself, but plan on starting my next trip off there... Thought starting with organic might ease me in better than a trip to Voyagers and getting horizontal almost immediately.

Thanks again.
I always end up here some time on a trip. Yeah, it would be a nice way to ease yourself in. Chill out after the travelling. bite to eat, nice drink and a g of outdoor goodness. If the Poison is on the menu it is a nice sativa that is quite energetic.

Sorry, didn't have time yesterday to upload any pics...soon.

KeyMonCha - yea i had the same idea initially, to smoke Yo-Yo's outdoor so I could ease myself into the amsterdam lifestyle but Yo-Yo was kinda of a trek on my first day so I just started smoking little by little from the coffee-shops nearby and then building up my tolerance that way. And yea, I would def. visit Yo-Yo again, in fact, I'd probably be a regular there if I moved to Ams.

notsofasteddie - surprisingly, i took these pics with my phone (LG nexus 4) and the panorama feature works really well, it gives some pics almost a fish eye appearance. That Day 2 canal pic is the Singel canal, I believe, near the Grey Area CS.

Prologue:

Ok, Mr. Piff is originally from NYC but currently working in St. Petersburg, Russia, where the weed situation is pretty nonexistent, to say the least. Having gone cold turkey for approx. six months without smoking (last time was in NY), I have been mentally preparing to get completely obliterated by Amsterdam weed, which is why I have perused through the travelogues on this site and researched into the various types of strains and coffeeshops so I would be better prepared to face my forthcoming state of inebriation and just being high as $#%& for the next 10 days. Now I have been to Amsterdam 3 times prior, all on layovers for a few hours each and I have thoroughly enjoyed every minute I spent there so I decided to finally go and experience actually living in the Dam.

Day 0:

So my gf and I hop on our charter bus from St. Petersburg, Russia to Helsinki, Finland. After quickly passing through border control into the EU (but no before purchasing 3 duty free beers) and a total of 5 uneventful hours of dozing of in the backseat of the red Renault minibus, we finally make it to the polished Helsinki airport – one of my favorite airports – quiet, no people/no delays, efficient, comfortable benches to sleep on. Anyway, we get there at around 1 am with 6 hours to go before the flight departs. Found some free benches, drank a few Finnish beers and tried to keep my eyes closed in a futile attempt to sleep while reading ACD here and there to pass the time.

Day 1:

Image

Time to board and at this point, Im pretty much somnambulating onto my KLM flight. Sit down, blah, blah…buckle up, coffee, crappy sandwich …. the usual flight routine and 2 and a half hours later we are landing in Schipol to an overcast morning at 8 30 am. Alighting from the plane, I grab my bag and with your typical stoner’s arrival grin at Schipol airport, I run off to buy train tickets. I’ve done this before, so we get on the right train. Gotta say that I really like the efficiency of the transportation system in the Netherlands, where even the buses have free Wi-Fi! It is a quiet and comfortable ride which gives great views of the blooming flowers and the verdure that has covered the Holland landscape. The train finally stops at Central Station and after I successfully restrain myself to push every commuter, children and elderly folk alike, aside and jet to the nearest coffeeshop, I walk outside at a leisurely pace while sporting a huge grin. I tell my gf to hurry up since I’m very dehydrated at this point and in dire need of a joint.

First plan of action is to go drop of the bags at our apt. which is conveniently located in the thick of things, on Harlemstraat. Speed-walking to the beginning of Harlemstraat, I spot coffeeshop Picasso so I tell my gf to go in with the bags and wait while I get the keys and a gram, but not necessarily in that order. So I ask the budtender for something mild and she recommends the White Widow (9/g ?).

Image
White widow from Picasso - sry for crappy pic

Grabbed a grinder from the BT and rolled a small, introductory white widow joint. But before I could light it, our host calls and says I can pick up the keys. Got the keys, and back to Picasso where my gf, who doesn’t smoke, has been passively inhaling fumes for at least 7 minutes now. Picasso is your basic shop, small but cozy, has a great view of the bustling Harlemstraat and offers relatively inexpensive weed. Feeling really anxious to unload all of our belongings, we leave Picasso and go to our new home. The apartment is great with a roof terrace that gives a great 360 view of Amsterdam. Now that’s cool and all but my joint is not gonna smoke itself. To be honest, I could not tell you how the WW tasted because I haven’t smoked in a while and but it definitely smelled like weed and it got me totally ripped since my tolerance was zero. No time to waste, we go back out and hop into Jay’s Juices for a breakfast mango concoction smoothie.

Next stop: Voyagers, which is now open. We get to the front door and are welcomed by the new sign and a dude with dreadlocks (HighlyBlessed I assume) who immediately asks for ID so I show mine and then asks for my gf’s ID, which she says she doesn’t have. So he politely asks us to leave. Already out the door, she realizes that she actually does have her passport on her (see: passive smoking in Picasso) so we go back in. Planning my order for months, I already know what to get: 1 gram of bio lemon haze (12/g) and a wild card gram of something that caught my eye (and nose) – the blue cheese (14/g?) and a coffee. Buy (drink) and fly, and we head out back towards Harlemstraat. On the way I pop into a shop to buy a grinder for 5e and some raw papers. We take a different route through the center, passing Central coffeeshop, and soon after I spot 420 Café which I heard so many good things about so I pop in before my gf has any time to object. The lady budtender, who looks very familiar, shows me the menu and having already bought a haze, I opt for the NYCD (12/g?).

Image
Sour Diesel from 420

I exit the shop to see my gf staring at me like I’m a crack-fiend with that face that all girls make to let you know that they do not approve. Anyway, we get back to our place, I proceed to roll up the lemon haze and smoke (half) the j because I’m still blitzed from the white widow. Again, I can’t really tell how the weed tastes yet, but that will change as I get back into the groove. Nevertheless, it all smelled amazing; especially the blue cheese which had a strong fragrance of blueberry, lemon, pine and cheese…but that will be set aside for the nightcap.

Just chilled at the place and enjoyed the view of the city from the roof until 3pm after which we were supposed to meet our friends (a couple) that are visiting Amsterdam for two days. After a few frantic “where are you now” type texts, we spot them walking aimlessly down Harlemstraat, after which the usual handshakes and hugs are exchanged. Greenhouse Lounge is right down the block so, as the most knowledgeable about weed and Amsterdam, I point everyone in that direction.

Image
Harlemstraat

We saunter in and I notice that im walking on water like jesus, but no, its just the aquarium with goldfish swimming under the floor. Group mentality takes over and they girls run downstairs and pick a table in the dark backroom even though I wanted to sit by the open entrance – don’t even care, Im high and just seen nemo swimming under my feet, should I smoke more? Well yea, we go upstairs and buy a gram of Amnesia haze (14/g?) and my friend gets the Super Silver Haze (14/g). I roll the silver haze and we, except my gf, all smoke. Voila, the weed worked and at this point im high like a condor so the immediate plane of action is to get out of this dungeon for some fresh air and food.

The rest of the day is hazy and just resulted in a lot of walking, sightseeing, waiting 2 hours on line for a canal boat tour and going to an Indian restaurant which had the most delicious tandoori fish. Get back to my place, light a J of some blue cheese, from voyagers and pass out.

It must be noted that the whole couple-couple arrangement, especially when no one really knows the city yet, is really not a good idea in terms of coordination and organization. We spent half the day deciding what to do, where to go, waiting in line etc. Still, Amsterdam is awesome.

lol probably. Voaygers is def an ACD stronghold. Sucks I didn't get a chance to go to there again, the Lemon Haze and Blue Cheese were legit.

anyway, the latest installment with pics to be added later:

Day 4

Wake up to another glorious sunny day in the Dam. I refrain from any smoking because I actually wanted to see what it was like to be sober for a change. Plus, this way I can muster up my lucid thoughts so I could plan everything we need for today’s excursion to Zaanse Schans. Never actually seen the real Holland yet, so it was high time to set out and explore. Of course my gear carrying case was with me for this trip.

We get to central station, buy tickets and have 10 minutes before our train bound for The Hague is scheduled to depart. So I go to the empty side of the platform and spark up a joint of Purple from Yo-Yo. Now I must note that I have never felt such freedom before and I could almost hear Nas’ lyrics reverberating in my head: “Imagine smoking weed on the street without cops harassing.”

Image

Riding on the train while high was short and sweet with the trip lasting a mere 15 minutes. We get off the train to an empty platform in the Dutch countryside and follow another tourist couple to the end of the platform only to realize that it was a dead end and the actual exit is via the underground tunnel in the middle of the station. So we walk all the way back. Another lesson learned: don't follow tourists who are even more clueless than you.

We are simply amazed at how clean and polished everything looks in this country. The flowers and trees are blooming everywhere, the sun is shining, got about 4 various joints tucked in my case…oh and for some reason, it smells like chocolate…hmm.

I spot the first windmill sitting right next to is a, you guessed it, chocolate factory. So my gf and I start laughing at how everything in this country seems so perfect to the point where even the industrial odors are pleasant. A few hundred meters ahead is a bridge that gives a great view of the windmills of Zaanse Schans; they apparently have their own distinct character and individual names.

Image

The grounds of this open-air museum are as picturesque as you can get with little canals, quaint little houses, farm animals grazing everywhere, and, of course, windmills. I gotta admit the place is a little touristy with all the gift shops but so is Amsterdam. So we wander around the premises and snap a few photos.

Image

Image

Zaanse Schans is perfect way to spend the day and get out of Amsterdam half the day and it's only 15 minutes away but completely different. I would recommend taking a bike with you because this place is perfect for bike riding against the backdrop of windmills and the polder – yea it's as cliché Dutch as you can get, but definitely an experience. There is a small boat ferry for 1e that takes people across the river into town so you don't have to walk all the way back to the bridge.

Image

Image

The town itself has many historic houses and seemed virtually empty but very serene. So just admiring all the scenery and telling each other every 2 minutes how we wouldn't mind living here, we end up back at the train station. I proceed to spark up a joint of the Northern Lights from Yo-Yo while waiting for the train – I truly love Holland. The ride back is as quick as the ride there and we are back at Central station. We stock up on snacks and supplies and spend the rest of the day resting our legs on our beloved terrace while tanning or, should I say, burning, but that’s another story in itself.

Image
This beer is amazing

Before you say “wtf, where are the coffee-shops,” well, I of course couldn’t forget that I had one of the most popular shops in all of Amsterdam less than a minute's walk from where I lived. I recalled reading of volcanoes on every table so I had to pay a visit. I went solo and in about a minute and thirty seven seconds door-to-door, I was ID’ed by the guy standing in front of Barney’s coffeeshop. I walk in and digital volcanoes are indeed sitting on every table. The menu is pretty extensive but I decide on a gram of Laughing Buddha at 14e/g. Thank god, because this would become my favorite strain of the trip. The smell is incredible: fruity, piney and a bit cheesy with the high being energetic and most certainly euphoric. So I filled up the bag at a temperature of 187 degrees and inhaled…and wow. This is how weed should be smoked! No coughing, no throat irritation etc. The taste was delicious with hint of lavender and lemon and you would think you didn’t actually get anything except for the vapor being slightly visible upon exhale - very smooth. Three bags later, I feel my cranium floating off into the ionosphere, so I decide its time to go back, but I will be definitely come back here again.

A few mixed joints containing everything from Blue Cheese to Pink Kush to Northern Lights are smoked while admiring the suns setting over the city and I am done. Peace.

Day 5

Vondeldam and Marken were on the agenda for today. Your typical tourist destinations but we really wanted to go get away from the city again and see some small fishing villages instead of a major town or city like Utrecht, which was originally planned. After smoking a morning joint of left over Laughing Buddha from Barney’s, we walked to central station, but this time it was to catch the bus.

Image
Passing by voyagers; the new sign is cool and that car cracks me up every time i see it

The bus was pretty crowded as a lot of people probably had the same idea as us, but it was still a pleasant ride north through the country side as I was following our route on my GPS navigation, which was made available thanks to the bus’s free Wi-Fi - thank you Dutch taxpayers, your country is amazing. About 20 minutes later, we arrive at Vondeldam’s main bus station.

Image
Vondeldam canal

Vondeldam is of course famous for producing the traditional Dutch wooden clogs and is a relatively small town, but with a very nice waterfront area that has many nice cafes and shops. Sitting at a café, which offers a great view of the harbor, we grab some morning coffee and sandwiches that are once again delicious. A ferry leaves for Marken every half hour but we weren’t too thrilled about this idea as we saw it being loaded with tourist groups. What did catch our attention was a yacht with a sign on it offering the same services as the ferry only with an extended sailing trip and refreshments for 50 euros. I said eff it and called the number. Within 10 minutes, a Dutch guy, which turns out to be our captain, parks his bike right next to the boat and gives us a warm greeting. This turned out to be the best decision of the entire vacation.

Image

As the boat is untied, he immediately commands me to grab the wheel and steer the vessel. Now I’ve never handled a yacht before but it’s always been my dream, so I enthusiastically grab the wheel, while still being mildly lifted from the morning Buddha keep in mind, and now we are leaving the port of Vondeldam with me steering the boat and grinning like I just stepped into Voyagers after arriving from Schipol airport. Initially, my gf wasn’t too confident in my abilities as captain and was a bit nervous but quickly accepted her fate as the Dutch guy said that he never actually steers the yacht himself lol. Driving this 40 foot sailboat turned out to be incredibly easy and we managed to leave the port unscathed and without incident. Seriously, it was so easy, you can probably do dabs and take hits of ice-o-later while driving the thing (which I might try next time). Soon after, our (other) captain shut off the engine and raised the sail; now we were officially sailing with the wind towards the Marken light house!

Image
Camera messed up but you get the idea

We rounded the cape towards our destination as the sun was shining and a pleasant breeze was blowing over us and to make the situation even better, unlimited beer! To make a long story shorter, sailing completely trumped taking the ferry and it’s more than worth it for only 50 euros – simply an amazing experience and can be cheaper than the ferry if you have more than 2 people. We get to Marken, and it is even smaller than Vondeldam but just as quaint and perhaps even more beautiful. It was originally an island but was then connected to the mainland with a causeway.

Image
Marken port

Image

Image

We tour the village and then have lunch on the pier looking at our yacht drinking one of the most delicious beers (Wieckse) I’ve had on the entire trip. Our Dutch friend was still waiting for us at the dock, so we hopped back on and set sail back to Vondeldam.

Image

By now, I was considering myself to be an expert skipper with 2 hours of sailing under my belt, so the trip back was as smooth as the trip there. We hop off in the port, say our goodbyes and proceed to explore the town.

Image
Vondeldam local

We saw all of Vondeldam on our way back to the bus station and this town is certainly worth a trip for anyone wishing to get away from Amsterdam for a day. We catch the bus back to central station and I’m back to lamping on my terrace.

Image
Coming back from central station

Unfortunately, I didn’t visit any coffee shops today with the exception of another trip to Barney’s for their volcano, where I purchased yet another gram of Laughing Buddha – this would become a regular thing for the rest of the trip. A walk around Jordaan and an evening of attempting to put a dent in my stash, and I’m done for the day. I'm determined to get back on my coffee shop steez tomorrow. Peace.

To be continued…

Thanks Mr Piff.... Good to hear... Was tempted to get .5g's of everything on the menu, but i'll probs go for the Purple and another item based on recommendations...

Can't find a current menu pic, so if anyone has any ideas on ideal purchases it would be greatly appreciated.

Do you still have the Capt's number? Is it 50e per person or for everyone? And does he mind you smoking reefer on his boat?
