What Types of ID Identification Are Acceptable in Coffeeshop

Post by feelgood »

I travel the world and my number 1 rule is always leave passport in the safe at hotel or somewhere else safe and never ever carry it around when going out in evenings to play. Actually, I never carry anything that I can't afford to lose, like credit cards, ATM, etc. I load up on cash and shop during the day and then take cards, passport, etc. back to hotel for safe keeping.

So what kind of ID would be acceptable and in what languages other than passport?

it depends on the coffee shop & how laid back they are. My girlfriend uses her "National Identity" card from Mexico, and no one has refused her yet.

If you are not an EU Citizen a passport is the only valid ID. Not to mention you are required to carry an ID at all times in The Netherlands.

I always find it funny how much push back is given to CS's that ask for ID. One of my regular spots cards everyone, except people they know, that come through the door. And it's almost seen as offensive to people, what the fuck. I mean where in the world should you not carry identification? If not to buy bud then to at least make sure that if shit happens someone knows who you are. It's not rocket science. Sorry for the rant but, I actually speak up when someone back talks a bud tender about showing them their ID.

I always have my passport on me outside my home country. Not to mention my drivers license, which is always on me.

My picture IDs happen to be in Chinese... thus the question of what languages... No I'm not Chinese, but have been living there long enough to have their IDs, driver license, etc.

Looks like I'll carry passport and other IDs, and see if they work before pulling out the passport.

Traveling in Paris, Barcelona, NY, beaches in Thailand... I've learned to never carry anything important on my body that someone can pickpocket, rob at knifepoint, or that I can drunkedly drop stumbling home at night or morning...

One word for tourists, it really is this simple - Passport.
Why stoners continue to debate this issue is beyond me, wayyyyy beyond.
Regardless of opinions, if one presents a valid passport, good to go 100% of the time.
If one is refused service, it didn't have anything to do with the valid Passport.

The guy makes a valid point though. I hate carrying my passport around on holiday - its the one and only thing that if you lose you are fucked for travelling back home. Credit cards can be cancelled and replaced as can driving license, national ID at your own leisure when you are back home or whatever but passport loss is a serious issue - embassy, pay for a new flight etc etc. I use a UK photo driving license as ID in Dam and haven't had any problems with it at all - rather lose that than my passport!!

Not only passport, but all the visa from other countries like China, Taiwan, Vietnam... all those would take weeks or months to replace after getting a new passport, and couldn't just drop in those countries on a whim like now... to much time and paperwork to finish... the China visa alone was nearly US$250 and included an overnight stop in Hong Kong to wait for processing...

I had my passport stolen from my hotel room once. After reporting it to the police I contacted the British Embassy who then contacted the airport and arranged for me to fly home without a passport. Wasn't a major problem in the end.

I carry my U.S. Florida Drivers License which has a photograph of me and I never have had a problem. The passport stays in the hotel safe!
