First Grow - Think Different Auto - LED & CFL.

Post by Dave09 »

First grow - Think Different Autoflower (Fem) by Dutch Passion Seeds.

Soil: Growise Multipurpose compost (Manufactured by Bord na Mona)
Lighting: 2x 23Watt (Tesco) CFL.
1x 150Watt Prakasa Seven Spectrum LED
Nutrients: Non existent at present - Need to learn more.

Originally had three beans but looks like one isn't going to pop correctly. Germinated in a glass of water and then on a plate with two damp sheets of kitchen roll.
Currently the plants are outside in the open as I'm waiting for pay day now to buy a cabinet that they will live in. This is why I am not using the LED light as of yet.

Day Five

Had to place a decent bit of soil around the stem of the plant as it seemed as if it was stretching like crazy. Its already 10cm and it's already had 3cm covered by soil to prevent it tipping over.

Currently the CFLS are not in use as Iv no where to hang them from.
I'm planning to start some low stress training in a week or so.
I will be getting a press from Argos to enclose them tomorrow as well as ordering some BioBizz nutes and Mylar tonight.

Day Eight

Just placed an order for:
  • 1 Litre BioBizz Grow
    1 Litre BioBizz Bloom
    500ml BioBizz TopMax
    250ml BioBizz Root Juice
    5M Mylar
I notice some of the newly developed tiny leaves have yellowing on their edges today. Hoping its just light bleaching, I've moved the lights further away from the plants now.

Got the press unit all set up today and hung the CFLs.

Ill coat the inside with a lining of mylar once that arrives during the week then I can also focus on nutes.
After hearing the BioBizz Topmax isn't worth piss any truth in this?

I've a bolt lock on the inside keeping the front door locked on the cabient.
Access is through a hinged door on the back.

Welcome to the world of growing... :)
I commend you on your quest to grow your own, more peeps should...
Starting off small, looks like a small grow area, so the choice of lighting equipment is probably a good one, however.................
....during veg, the proper light spectrum is in the blue range (450-550), however by looking at your photos, you might have too much red (650+).
IMHO, the wattage of the CFL's is much too low at 23 watts; my advice is to buy one of these... http://www.head-nature.com/tree/4034/CF ... Dual.xhtml
I use this type of light system for the entire veg period, switching to 600 watt Metal Halide (with adjustable ballast 250/400/600/660) when flowering. I'll run the MH until all plants have sexed, approximately 2 weeks, then change out the MH for a High Pressure Sodium (HPS) for the remainder of flowering.
As for the nutrients, Bio Bizz, I've used them before and was satisfied with the results. Something to give much thought to - the amount of nutrients you plan on feeding the plants. I suggest starting out by using 75% of the manufacturers recommended amount. Observe the plants, adjust as needed. Under fed plants look weak, begin yellowing, etc..., while overfed sees most plants begin with very dark leaves, followed by burning tips and edges, then the entire leaf...
Light feeding aids in preventing problems with a build up of salts, and when the time comes to flush/leach out the nutrients as well.
Good luck and happy farming...

Ill definitely consider picking up two of those CFLs after this grow I am on a budget (Not a terribly tight one but I still need to source extractor fans and a carbon filter - I live in an apartment)
In regards to the LED light it does seem a little short on the blue spectrum however it does not seem to have any negative impact on the plants, they are at day nine growing rapidly and looking quite healthy.

The specs for the light are as follows;
Wavelength: Deep Red: 660nm, 10 leds
Red: 630nm, 30 leds
Blue: 460nm, 8 leds
Orange: 610nm, 6leds
White: 15000-20000K, 6 leds
UV, 1 led
IR, 1 led

62 3w leds configured with 10 Deep Red leds, 30 Red leds, 8 Blue leds, 6 Orange leds, 6 White leds, 1 UV led and 1 IR led.

And regarding the nutes I've read that it alot easier with organic nutes to avoid nute burn is there any truth to this?

Some new images; My grow cabinet awaiting to be sealed up once the mylar arrives :)

And a new pot what could be in it?

You could really do with some air flow in there, they should be much bigger by now, my mate just finished some think differents, he did them under LED aswell and a cfl and got 3oz of 2 plants. That was just a test and he is now going to try them under sodium as this strain has very good potential to yield big very quickly, I may even try them next.

Day Sixteen (Sprouted 18th July)

I got myself some mylar but was stoned glueing it on, ran out of super glue.
Got myself destroyed in it and I don't think the fumes did me any good, went to sleep dying sick like a terrible cold not much better today.

Started lightly to LST my largest plant. Also have started using Bio Bizz grow 1ml/1L and .5ml/1L of their Root Juice product.

My girlfriend has a regular photoperiod plant growing in the setup to. Its a ultrasour fem from ThSeeds.
I plant on having to veg it untill the autos are done so it may very well be a big plant that will have to endure alot of LST and fimming when it gets bigger.

Id be happy with three ounces a plant this time round as its my very first grow. Here in Ireland an once of good weed can go for 400euro so I'd certainely be happy with 3. These are autoflowers you've to keep in mind however they can be heavy yielders. I've seen grow journals of up to 400gr/plant in soil.

I now have a fan blowering into the case during most of the day.

Looking good, sort of... however, you are still using the wrong spectrum for vegetation.
Pack away the LED until flowering, use only the CFL's and watch with amazement how the plants react.
Have a close look at your plants... there should be more spacing between the nodes than what appears in the photos. A sign you're using the wrong light spectrum...
I prefer short inter nodal spacing, however your plants spacing is too tight for my liking. Just my style... :)
As for LST'ing, I'd wait until there's a little more spacing between the nodes... personal preference.
Others noted the lack of ventilation, you might want to take a look at that before it becomes a serious issue.
Lastly, what's up with the stuffed animals? Either get a Tasmanian Devil up in that group, or bin the lot...  ;)
Happy Farming...

+1
let them grow/stretch a bit before any LSTing

+1000

Air flow is one of the key to a succesful grow.More than a fan moving air INSIDE the cabinet (pretty useless if you ask) , you need a fan (or a small extractor, even better) properly located, moving air THROUGH the cabinet.Go check on ICmag in the "microgrow" section, and the official DIY linkorama if you haven't already, a true goldmine of informations there.

Happy grow!
