A two hour (nearly non stop) train ride through Germany and the Netherlands beats a layover any day in my opinion. The train costs around 115 USD return, so that still gets us into AMS pretty quickly for around $950. Which from west FL. is pretty good.
Air Berlin is the carrier.

Brutal right now... $1125-1200 for mid-December through New Years. The reality is I'd probably spend the extra $75, both since I hate US Airways and since I'm accumulating miles on Delta and getting close to rewards travel!
Looking into regional airports, Brussels is under a grand, so that's a possibility...
*On a side note, I love how it is cheaper to fly Tampa>Atlanta>Amsterdam than it is to fly Atlanta>Amsterdam!

Update: The price has remained flat during the last two weeks at $1008.
KLM IAD>AMS nonstop
Reviewing Kayak's and Bing's price predictions, Kayak would flip between buying and waiting, where as Bing always predicted the price to drop. This changed today, 17 days out from the travel dates:
Kayak
Bing
Makes one wonder...

Right on! Best price so far, which airline?
yeah plus the train fare and imo too much Time,, but hey that's just my opinion
I have flown R/T to Brussels on AA award tickets because that makes it a one stop trip for me. Otherwise I have to go through Heathrow, leave and re-enter security, and possibly rush to make a connection.
That works for me (mostly) on the way over, but returning is problematic. It's either a fairly early train from Amsterdam CS to Brussels, then transfer for the airport train or spend a night in Brussels. And of course the train ride is not free. But I don't mind paying it if I'm traveling on an award ticket.
I once almost did Dusseldorf on an award ticket (United/Lufthansa?) but it didn't pan out.
I'm jealous of those who can get directs from the US. Or anywhere else, for that matter. ;-)

Not yet

but I feel obligated to spend some dollars

in both of those states
it's a lot of miles to CO and even more to WA but it's the mile up that gets you
