In our Amsterdam rental a line was added to the agreement: if you have an accident - it is YOUR fault! We laughed about it, but it was added to deal with Americans... The only people on the planet who do not want to take responsibility for their actions.

Why not Stop in and ask the bud tender or a waitress about the girl that fell. They'll let you know.
I understand you point about how "some" in the US will sue because it's Monday and rainy, however...
...what does being Dutch or American or any nationality have to do with Barney's culpability?
The first time I walking in the place nearly 10 years ago I said that "hole to hell" was an accident waiting to happen... and it did.

Lastly, some law suits aren't about $$$... in this case, unsafe working conditions is a start.
Here in Europe, medical bills aren't an issue as is the case in the US,  ...so there's that to consider when thinking about the number of law suits in the US.
Either way, changes NEED to be made... like years ago. Negligence, plain and simple, or not so...

i brought it up because YOU mentioned a lawsuit -

She will probably receive all the care she needs without the fees that are required in the USA
as fas as accidents waiting to happen? ... Amsterdam is full of them. They expect you to pay attention, it is part of the culture. I do not say this to somehow dismiss or diminish the accident, it's just a reality. She worked there, she knew all about the hole from hell - just waiting to swallow someone..... wonder what would've happened if it was a customer that fell in the hole and if the situation would be handled differently... (and if country of origin would play into it)

Member of the public, that would be very bad with a big liability pay out, not U.S big style payout but 6 figures easily, totally different kettle of fish is she didn't work there.

High,
Easy on the upper case friend, we all know I broached the subject.. ;)
As for medical care, there's no probably about it; she will receive all of the care needed. As I stated, not an issue in Europe; mandatory health care.
As for the rest, accidents do happen, and then there's what happened at Barney's.
What would happen if it was a customer? Depends on the customer I suppose... from "Meh, forget about it. A broken leg and a dislocated shoulder happen even to the clumsiest of people. I should have been paying attention to where I was going. Please, allow me to pay for any loss of business I may have caused." (extreme sarcasm)... to "I'll sue, I'll own your ass, I'll own all Barney's establishments, I'LL SUE!!!" I understand the preceding are extremes, but so is human nature.
Also, doesn't really matter what a customers country of origin is although I understand the connotation. There would be culpability on behalf of Barney's, no doubt, just depends on how greedy the victim is... which we all know but I'll say it anyway - greed is all encompassing, without reservation or boundary... goes towards country of origin.

Watch out for turtle traps... :)

...just a couple of questions:

is Barney's the only location...not just coffeeshop, but location...in Amsterdam that has that funky trap door going downstairs? Seems that all the stairs in Amsterdam are precarious...especially the narrow, steep, winding ones going up...

How long has Barney's been at that location? I remember my first Cannabis Cup in 2000 and Barney's was a pretty "new" place. How "new" is a building that was built in, what, the 1700's? I'm quite sure the trap door has been there since then. Is this the only incident in the 13 years Barney's has been there? Is this the only location in Amsterdam with this type of incident? ...or do we just know about this one because of this forum?

I agree that door should be SHUT. I'll bet it is now...

I certainly hope the girl is ok. I have a sick feeling that I know who she is...

Nah there are other "holes to hell"
Seen one at burger bar near 420 cafe, they kept there spuds and meat down there
I assume (assumptions being the mother of all fuck ups) its to save floor space ie no staircase.
You can usually find them in pubs/bars to access the cellar...

All over the Netherlands in the old city centre buildings, because the Dutch take parsimony to hitherto unachieved levels. I had to go up two flights to my room in Leeuwarden recently: one flight was what I'd call standard steep, the other was having a laugh. I couldn't help thinking they should have gone the whole hog and just put in a rope ladder.

There's a black hole  behind the bar in t'Nes... straight down... wonder if anyone has ever taken a spill down those stairs?

Barney's has been there at least 9 years. The first time I went in was 2004, 4 years after you...
They remodeled a couple of years ago, but I guess the hole to hell wasn't and still isn't a priority, or maybe it will be now.
Hope she's ok...

it is not unknown for people to succumb to heart attacks and the like while on holiday and occupying rooms at the top of a flight of horrible cloggie ladderstairs.
one has to feel a great deal of sympathy for the poor buggers charged with bringing the corpse of some hugely fat tourist of unspecified nationality down to street level.
I have been told that a building's furniture hoist is sometimes used to expedite such matters, which is a performance that I would really like to see.

on a side note, I am often very shocked at the number of disgustingly fat people one sees in Amsterdam coffeeshops.

As I am disgusted by your lack of humanity. I guess we are all disgusted by different things. You'd like to see a dead body being lowered from an upper storey building on a furniture hoist? What a deeply troubled individual you must be.

I've been rather a fan of stanleymoon since he turned up, as he has a good line in deadpan/black humour. In real life, I suppose, he could be anything from St Francis to worse than 10,000 Hitlers, but as long as he makes me laugh on here he's OK.
